This position is located at the VA Illiana Health Care System in Danville, Illinois. The Carpenter Helper performs duties of a general mechanic (minor building maintenance-type tasks) and assist journeyman carpenters throughout all areas of the Illiana Health Care System including it's CBOCs.
Duties
Mounting artwork and similar decorations
Assembling and making minor repairs to furniture including shelving.
Installing wall-mounted trash receptacles and sharps containers.
Installing bulletin boards, tack strips and marker.
Installing toilet tissue, towel and soap dispensers and repairing them as required.
Installing and repairing signs
Installing wall-type hat/coat racks, etc
Installing curtain track and blinds
Repairs desk lock and assembles furniture
Work Schedule: Monday-Friday, 7am - 3:30pm
Position Description Title/PD#: Carpenter Helper/PD08147O
Physical Requirements: Walking, pushing carts, stooping, bending, lifting light loads (8-10 lbs) for sustained periods is required. There is contact with plaster and cement dust, paint fumes and other noxious odors on occasion while performing work.
Working Conditions: This position requires working inside and outside occasionally while traveling between buildings and throughout the Illiana Heath Care System. Work is not ordinarily subject to extreme temperature. There is the hazard of absorption through skin and inhalation of solvents, paints, and thinners, etc, if protective clothing is not worn and adequate ventilation is not maintained in working areas.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.
Your experience as a Carpenter Helper should include, but is not limited to experience in carpentry, electrical, mechanical maintenance and related fields; sufficient formal education is required to enable incumbent to read, write, comprehend written instructions and make simple computations and reports; rudimentary knowledge of electricity, carpentry, painting and furniture repair; continuous attention and concentration is required; must schedule his/her own work so as not to conflict with or disrupt medical personnel involved in patient care (keep down dust, noise, etc. during ward rounds and dressing changes, for example); must be able to plan ahead in order to submit timely requisitions for supplies; and should be able to design for fabrication or specify by description carts, tools necessary to carry out his/her duties.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
