You will serve as a SHIPS MECHANICAL & PIPING SYSTEM INSPECTOR in the NONNUCLEAR INSPECTION DIVISION, QUALITY ASSURANCE OFFICE of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will receive general technical and administrative guidelines from the supervisor prior to commencing the assignment. You will review completed work to ensure that the intended requirements have been met. You will sign for inspections based only on personal observation or personnel review of documented evidence. You will initiate work stoppage when further work would cover a defect or endanger personnel or equipment.

Requirements

  • Must be a US Citizen.
  • Must be determined suitable for federal employment.
  • Must participate in the direct deposit pay program.

  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • This position is subject to work an uncommon tour, including nights, weekends, and holidays to meet mission requirements. Overtime or night differential pay and/or unusual duty hours may be required.

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO INSPECT: *Performs mechanical piping and sound isolation inspections on nuclear submarines and nuclear/nonnuclear surface ships. *Performs inspections in accordance with Technical Work Documents, Design Drawings, Engineering Test, process Instructions, Military Specifications, and Manufactures Instructions Books. *Performs arrival and pre-inspections of systems/components to determine existing conditions in support of nuclear reactor plan prior to the start of an overhaul. *Performs in-process inspections at various checkpoints during the removal, disassembly, repair, assembly and installation of aforementioned systems and associated components/equipment. *Conducts a witness, shop, and shipboard test to verify, and document material, component, equipment, and system conformance to rigid specifications for satisfactory operational performance.
