You will serve as an INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST in the Industrial Hygiene Program Office (IHPO) of NMRTU GROTON CT. THIS IS A DIRECT HIRE ANNOUNCEMENT. Section 1109 of the National Defense Authorization Act Fiscal Year 2020 Public Law 116-92 amended Section 9905 of title 5, United States Code (U.S.C.) to streamline and simplify certain Department of Defense civilian Direct Hire Authorities to recruit and appoint qualified candidates directly to certain positions in the competitive service in the DoD.

Duties

You will perform industrial hygiene inspections, surveys, and evaluations individually or part of a team. You will evaluate workers that may be exposed to a wide range of physical, chemical, and biological hazards. You will evaluate and review industrial hygiene related aspects of research on new or rare chemicals for which toxicity data may not be available to use as guidelines. You will present oral briefings and provide detailed written reports of Industrial Hygiene survey findings including health hazards identified, exposure monitoring required and controls recommended.

Qualifications

GS12: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience applying industrial hygiene concepts, principles, and practices carrying out all industrial hygiene programs; Experience investigating health problems to determine probable cause and recommend measures to minimize health hazards; Experience devising control measures, including ventilation, shielding, material substitution, change in work procedures, and use of personal protective devices to adapt safety measures and to control hazardous exposures; GS11: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience reviewing industrial hygiene surveys, facility plans, renovation or modification structures to assist in health and safety inspections; Experience assisting with evaluating occupational health hazards to help determine causes and identify risks to safeguard employees; Experience utilizing directives, laws and regulations, applicable to exposure and control procedures to interpret level requirements for safety measures of the workplace; OR-3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree OR- combination of education and experience that equates to 100% of the requirement. Basic Requirements

The education must be accredited by an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education(external link) at the time the degree was obtained. Applicants must meet one of the following requirements:

  • A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or
  • A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or
  • Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene(external link) (ABIH).

Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.
