You will serve as a INDUSTRIAL HYGIENIST of NMRTU GROTON CT. THIS IS A DIRECT HIRE ANNOUNCEMENT. Section 1109 of the National Defense Authorization Act Fiscal Year 2020 Public Law 116-92 amended Section 9905 of title 5, United States Code (U.S.C.) to streamline and simplify certain Department of Defense civilian Direct Hire Authorities to recruit and appoint qualified candidates directly to certain positions in the competitive service in the Department of Defense.

Duties

You will perform industrial hygiene inspections, surveys and evaluations. You will detect violations of published health standards (e.g. Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA). You will conduct industrial hygiene surveys and assessments of potential occupational exposure for individuals experiencing health effects or other symptoms believed to be due to occupational exposure. You will evaluate proposed new work processes and/or materials and or recommend measures to minimize health hazards. You will devise a variety of control measures, including ventilation, shielding, material substitution, change in work procedures, isolation, education, personal protective devices.

Requirements

  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for the GS-11: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience applying industrial hygiene concepts, principles, and practices carrying out all industrial hygiene programs. Experience evaluating occupational health hazards to include those for which the nature and extent of hazard is not completely understood. Experience devising control measures for ventilation, shielding, material, substitution, and change in work procedures. Experience investigating health problems which arise among workers to determine probable cause. Experience drafting industrial hygiene policy and guidance for occupational health and safety professionals. In order to qualify for the GS-09: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Experience applying industrial hygiene concepts, principles, and practices carrying out all industrial hygiene programs. Experience assisting in the evaluation of occupational health hazards to include those for which the nature and extent of hazard is not completely understood. Experience assisting in devising control measures for ventilation, shielding, material, substitution, and change in work procedures. Experience investigating health problems which arise among workers to determine probable cause. Education

Applicants must meet the following positive education qualifications requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess.
  • A bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree in industrial hygiene, occupational health sciences, occupational and environmental health, toxicology, safety sciences, or related science; or
  • A bachelor's degree in a branch of engineering, physical science, or life science that included 12 semester hours in chemistry, including organic chemistry, and 18 additional semester hours of courses in any combination of chemistry, physics, engineering, health physics, environmental health, biostatistics, biology, physiology, toxicology, epidemiology, or industrial hygiene; or
  • Certification from the American Board of Industrial Hygiene(external link) (ABIH).

Courses in the history or teaching of chemistry are not acceptable.
