You will serve as a NUCLEAR MECHANICAL & STRUCTURAL SYSTEMS INSPECTOR (SHIPS) SUPERVISOR I in the NUCLEAR INSPECTION DIVISION, QUALITY ASSURANCE OFFICE of PORTSMOUTH NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Duties

You will supervise Federal Wage System (FWS) inspection programs with direct responsibility for supervising nonsupervisory inspectors of mechanical, piping, and structural systems of the nuclear reactor plant. You will perform mechanical and structural processes, product and test inspections on assigned refueling and overhaul work. You will be responsible for carrying out Equal Employment Opportunity (EEO) policies and communicating support of the subordinates. You will define quality standards and oversee work while in progress and upon completion. You will ensure that subordinates observe regulations and rules on maintaining a collaborative and professional work environment. You will perform other related duties as assigned by the Branch Head.

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • Supervisors in the executive branch have a heightened personal responsibility for advancing government ethics. You will be required to review the 14 General Principles of Ethical Conduct at 5 CFR 2635.101.

Qualifications

The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability To Lead Or Supervise Performing inspections as a nuclear mechanical and structural systems inspector. Leading, mentoring, and training subordinate inspectors while using collaborative skills and promoting diversity. Coordinating priorities and deadlines with numerous project and production personnel to maximize efficient use of resources while meeting the needs of the shipyard. Explaining technical subjects and being familiar with the mechanical systems associated with naval nuclear reactor plants. Identifying and resolving problems in addition to proposing solutions to unusual or complex problems.
