About the Position: This position is with The Chemical Biological Center (CBC). The Aberdeen Proving Ground (Edgewood Area) is situated adjacent to the towns of Edgewood and Joppatowne and is located in Harford County, Maryland. APG-EA sits on 13,000 acres with the Bush River to the east and the Chesapeake Bay to the south, offering many amenities to include recreation and child/day care facilities.

Duties

Serve as a Biologist responsible for preparing coordinating and directing the implementation of micro-biological laboratory tests and analysis, including operations involving potential and known human pathogens and recombinant organisms. Participate with testing organizations in test design and analysis; liaison with pertinent functional areas such as safety, security and surety. As a principal investigator, formulates, plans, coordinates, and maintains a biology laboratory within established CDC procedures and pays special attention to laboratory containment guidelines, safety and surety regulations. Consultant and advisor to the scientific and technical personnel of the Center, other DA and DOD agencies and their contractors. Skills required in a large variety of subject matter areas including specialized knowledge in microbiology, with an emphasis on pathogenic bacteria and viruses. Serve as a BioSafety committee member.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Secret security clearance for the duration of employment.
  • This position is subject to a pre-employment drug test screening, and random drug testing thereafter.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 25% of the time.
  • Position requires certification in Biological Personnel Reliability Program (BPRP) and if required Chemical Personnel Reliability Program (CPRP), which requires random drug testing and medical evaluation IAW AR 50-1 and AR 50-6
  • You may be required to work with or in close proximity to hazardous chemical warfare materiel, biological warfare materiel, recovered chemical warfare materiel, toxic industrial materiel, toxic industrial chemicals, x-rays and explosives.
  • You will be required to follow associated standard operating procedures and regulations to ensure personnel safety.

Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the specialized experience requirements listed below: Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes (1) Preparing, coordinating and directing the implementation of micro-biological laboratory tests and analysis; (2) Participating with testing organizations in test design and analysis; (3) Communicating with internal and external stakeholders to accomplish the organizational mission. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-12). You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas: CommunicationsLeadershipProgram ManagementTechnical Competence Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-12).
