Duties
Serve as Deputy Director responsible for day-to-day operations of the directorate.
Direct and oversee a workforce of 270 employees performing very complex theoretical and applied research and development programs.
Serve as a consultant on scientific and technological programs and problems that extend well beyond their scientific field.
Research and develop portions of Joint Service Program in Chemical Biological Defense.
Identify important new concepts or discoveries.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- A Three-year trial/probationary period may be required.
- Supervisory one -year trial/probationary period may be required.
- This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 25% of the time.
- You must be able to obtain and maintain a Top Secret security clearance.
- The duties of this position meet the criteria for compliance with Federal and Department of the Army Drug Free Workplace Programs.
- Detection of the presence of drugs is warranted. This position is subject to a pre-employment screening, and random testing thereafter, to include testing based on reasonable suspicion and testing due to direct involvement with an on-duty accident.

- Position may be filled as a temporary promotion, reassignment, or change to lower grade by a current permanent Army employee. This may be extended up to a maximum of five years. This position may be made permanent without further competition.
- Position may be filled as a temporary appointment not-to-exceed two years. Temporary appointments may be extended up to a maximum of three years.
- Current permanent Federal employees (to include permanent Army employees) applying for a temporary appointment will be appointed/converted into a temporary appointment with no statutory return rights back to a permanent position.

Basic Requirement for Supervisory Biologist:
A. Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
B. Combination of education and experience which includes courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
Basic Requirement for Supervisory Physical Scientist:
A. Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
OR
B. Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to one of the majors, as shown in A above, that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Basic Requirement for Supervisory Chemist:
A. Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in the physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering which includes 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by course work in mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
OR
B. Combination of education and experience which includes course work equivalent to a major in the physical sciences, life sciences, or engineering, including at least 30 semester hours in chemistry, supplemented by mathematics through differential and integral calculus, and at least 6 semester hours of physics, plus appropriate experience or additional education. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)
In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:
Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes 1.Planning the work and strategic direction of a diverse group of professional scientists, engineers and technical personnel engaged in conducting research investigations/studies in support of the Chemical Biological Defense (CBD)Program.
2. Supervising chemical and/or biological agent operations in chemical and/or biological surety laboratories.
3.Identifying and implementing strategic organizational changes to meet future mission needs with state of the art technologies. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (DB-04).
