This position is located in Grand Canyon National Park, in the Facility Management Division, North Rim duty station.
Duties
Major Duties:
Prepare and monitor an annual operating budget for maintenance and operation of buildings and quarters at the North Rim, and Tuweep.
Supervise carpentry trade worker(s) in the construction, alteration, modification or repair of a wide range of features in buildings.
Supervises plumbers tasked with installation, modification and repair of new and existing utility, supply, and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems and water closets, tubs, fire sprinkler systems, and showers.
Supervises HVAC operational, maintenance and construction activities. Ensures staff perform scheduled preventative maintenance work on HVAC equipment.
Oversees the placement of finishes on a variety of interior and exterior surfaces of offices, buildings, other structures, and equipment. Supervises all painting, varnishing, etc. functions to include marbling, graining, speckling, tinting, and toning of paint, and matching existing colors.
North Rim Area Information:
The North Rim District is situated on the rim of the Grand Canyon amidst the vast public lands of the Arizona Strip. It is about 20 miles from the South Rim by a strenuous hike through the Grand Canyon or a 215 mile drive which takes approximately 4 hours. The nearest community with full range of services is located in Kanab, UT approximately 80 miles from the North Rim. The elevation on the North Rim is about 8,200 feet and consequently the climate in the summer is mild with highs in the 80's and lows in the 50's. Between May 15 and October 15 the North Rim receives approximately 500,000 visitors. The North Rim has a robust concession operation which features a historic full service lodge with accommodations serving around 500 visitors, 230 concession employees, a general store, post office, mule ride concession, gas station, campground, etc. Beyond the North Rim Village the district has about 20 miles of paved scenic roads, 80 miles of high clearance 4 wheel drive roads, and hundreds of miles of trails/routes including immediate access to the North Kaibab Trail/cross-canyon corridor.
Recreational opportunities include hiking, running, climbing, canyoneering, rafting, road/mountain biking, skiing, and numerous other options in nearby communities such as St. George, Utah and Page, Arizona. Zion National Park, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Vermillion Cliffs National Monument, and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument are all within a half day drive. Employees are assigned quarters, possibly in a cabin, apartment, or house.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:
Ability to Lead or Supervise (SCREEN OUT) The Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor is able to perform the full range of Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor tasks listed under close supervision. The Maintenance Mechanic Supervisor performs duties such as: (1) leading workers in proper trades and labor methods in the maintenance and repair of facilities; (2) instructing others in the plans, blueprints, materials, and tools needed to maintain historic non-residential structures; (3) performing with installation, maintenance, repair and construction work in building maintenance trades, such as carpentry, electrical, plumbing, masonry, HVAC, roofing and/or painting; (4) complying with safety program directives to ensure a safe work environment.
