This position is located in Grand Canyon National Park, North Rim, AZ in the Facility Management Division.
Duties
This is a career-seasonal position and subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career-seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment, but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, selectee will be in a non-pay/non-duty status for at least 2 weeks to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. Selectee is guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment. The typical season for Grand Canyon National Park is April to mid-March, but can be variable during these months due to project requirements or weather conditions.
Major Duties:
Painting - Performs painting duties with little oversight and/or review of work during progress or upon completion. Paints, decorates, and refinishes a variety of interior and exterior surfaces of offices and buildings, family dwellings, other structures.
Masonry - Performs mostly concrete and plaster touch up around existing historic and other masonry structures. Uses knowledge of settling, floating, and troweling concrete to the finish required. Mixes masonry cement, sand, and water for laying bricks, cinder blocks, and flagstone. Uses hand tools relating to plastering and concrete work such as shovels, hoes, trowels of all types, rakes, bull floats, edger's, and hawks. Uses gas and electric cement mixers.
Carpentry - Constructs, alters, modifies or repairs a wide range of features in buildings, quarters and other facilities. Builds small structures and replaces deteriorated sections of existing· structures. Installs exterior siding and roofing. Installs interior and exterior trim materials. Installs floor coverings such as tile, linoleum, and carpet. Works from simple instructions, blueprints, and sketches. Operates various carpentry equipment and tools ( e.g. routers, band and scroll saws, and drill presses, etc.) Also operates various power and hand tools such as portable drills, clippers, joiners, shapers, sanders, power activated nail guns/combustion type saws, etc.
Electrical - Performs electrical tasks such as replacing light switches and household light fixtures, changing light bulbs, and assisting electrician when pulling wire in conduit and installing electric boxes.
Engineering Equipment Operation & Repair - Working largely without direct supervision, operates and performs minor maintenance on a variety of vehicles such as ten wheel dump truck, front end loader, road broom grader, and sewage pumper truck. Operates equipment on flat or rolling terrain, in refuse dumps, and at construction sites with simple terrain problems and performs duties such as plowing snow, spreading road material, hauling materials to job site, loading material on dump truck, removing rock slides, clearing sides of roads, removing hazardous trees, base materials for roads, walks, parking lots, etc. Operates equipment in confined areas.
Area Information:
The North Rim District is situated on the rim of the Grand Canyon amidst the vast public lands of the Arizona Strip. It is about 20 miles from the South Rim by a strenuous hike through the Grand Canyon or a 215 mile drive which takes approximately 4 hours. The nearest community with full range of services is located in Kanab, UT approximately 80 miles from the North Rim. The elevation on the North Rim is about 8,200 feet and consequently the climate in the summer is mild with highs in the 80's and lows in the 50's. Between May 15 and October 15 the North Rim receives approximately 500,000 visitors. The North Rim has a robust concession operation which features a historic full service lodge with accommodations serving around 500 visitors, 230 concession employees, a general store, post office, mule ride concession, gas station, campground, etc. Beyond the North Rim Village the district has about 20 miles of paved scenic roads, 80 miles of high clearance 4 wheel drive roads, and hundreds of miles of trails/routes including immediate access to the North Kaibab Trail/cross-canyon corridor.
Recreational opportunities include hiking, running, climbing, canyoneering, rafting, road/mountain biking, skiing, and numerous other options in nearby communities such as St. George, Utah and Page, Arizona. Zion National Park, Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, Vermillion Cliffs National Monument, and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument are all within a half day drive. Employees are assigned quarters, possibly shared, in a cabin, apartment, or house.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, you must have sufficient knowledge and ability in the following job-related factors:
Ability to Do the Work of the Position without More Than Normal Supervision (SCREEN OUT)
Ability To Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprints reading)
Use of Measuring Instructions
Technical Practices (theoretical precise, artistic)
Knowledge of materials
Knowledge of Equipment Assembly, Installation Repair, etc.
Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
Selective Placement Factor- you must possess a Class B (or higher) Commercial Driver's License, or you will be rated as ineligible.
If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT factor above is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration. To be minimally qualifying you must demonstrate in your resume experience with at least two of the following trades as a Maintenance Worker WG-4749-08 at the journeyman level: carpentry, masonry, painting, electrical, and engineering equipment operation and repair. At this level, you have performed the work with a high level of independence.

Education
There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
