This position is located at the Southern AZ VA Healthcare System Radiology Department under the Radiology Service Line. The incumbent serves as the direct supervisor of the Computed Tomography Technologists. The incumbent reports to the Radiology Assistant Chief Technologist.

Duties

Major duties include, but are not limited to: Reviews all diagnostic CT studies for accuracy, completeness, and technical quality. Coordinates the flow of patients through the CT section by efficient assignment of work and maximum utilization of staff and CT equipment. Expedites the examinations of acutely ill patients by communicating and working with Radiology staff, nursing, and radiologists. Works with other services to meet their imaging needs as well as from locations outside the radiology department/medical center. Performs radiologic procedures in the diagnostic section including OR, portable, and utilizing the mobile c-arms, provides imaging capabilities to the MPU, when staffing levels require the incumbent to do so. As staffing dictates incumbent may be required to work off tours (PM, AM, Holiday shifts). Ensuring that patient care is continued without delay or interruption. Works with the Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist for general radiology to coordinate evening and night shift CT hybrid coverage when needed to meet Stroke Protocol requirements. Plans in-service programs for technical staff based on parameters set by the Chief Technologist, Clinical Directors, or Radiology Service Chief. Oversees image transmission and acquisition process to ensure that all radiographic images are transmitted into PAC's system. Ensures QA is performed on imaging equipment and assists the physicist as needed performing QA on all CT equipment. Practices hospital safety, infection control, universal precautions, and radiation safety in accordance with age and/or gender specific departmental guidelines. Assesses and reviews requisitions with clerical staff and technologists, interacts with requesting physicians and radiologists regarding requests when necessary. Participates in the student educational experience within the department as directed, serving as the student coordinator. Assists in initiating and implementing changes in methods of delivering patient care in radiology. Implements and reviews departmental and medical center policy and procedures. Effectively communicates verbally and through example and attitude, the goals and mission of the service to employees under their supervision. Ensures activities of division are carried out to meet the goals of the department in a timely manner. Serves as control point clerk. Assures supplies are available in all areas utilizing the OmniCells. Researches and plans equipment purchases to ensure facility is providing quality care and reducing referrals to community providers. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE). English Language Proficiency: DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: Supervisory Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist GS-10 Experience: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level, directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs and demonstrate the potential to acquire the assignment-specific KSAs designated by an asterisk (*). Knowledge of radiation protection standards, devices and techniques, including concepts of accumulated dosage, dose monitoring, and genetic changes. Ability to utilize advanced imaging software that supports complex imaging programs and recognize changes in equipment and procedures that might result in increased exposures, and ability to recommend methods to prevent such exposures. Knowledge of basic physics including concepts of energy, electric power, magnetic fields, and properties of x-ray, to understand the operation of the equipment. Knowledge and skill in positioning of patients for a wide variety of highly complex imaging studies. *Ability to analyze organizational, technical, and administrative problems and to develop and implement solutions that result in efficient section operation. Ability to evaluate quality management procedures and processes. *Ability to analyze and use data effectively to manage workload, quality, performance, and productivity. *Skill in developing new policies and guidelines as needed. Skill in problem solving and conflict resolution. Preferred Experience: Minimum of 2 years of full-time experience in Computed Tomography. Supervisory experience preferred. Physical Requirements: Light to Moderate lifting and carrying, up to 44 pounds; straight pulling; reaching above shoulders; use of both hands and fingers required; walking, standing; crawling; kneeling; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; depth perception; ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors; hearing (aid permitted).
