This position is located at the Southern AZ VA Health Care System (SAVAHCS) Diagnostic Imaging Department. Incumbents at this grade level must be qualified to independently provide services in specialized areas of general radiologic technology, interventional radiology and cath lab, and computed tomography services with only occasional oversight or direction for highly complex issues. Ability to check systems for operation and assess acceptable performance based on established guidelines.
Duties
Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Knowledge of calibration parameters and the ability to adjust as needed. Knowledge of patient's clinical record, diagnosis, and laboratory results.
Ability to monitor patient's physiologic changes during procedures and keep the radiologist informed.
Skill in using tact, diplomacy, and courtesy in dealings with the customer base, patients, staff, family, visitors, and volunteers.
Knowledge of anatomy and physiology, and cross-sectional anatomy, recognizing unusual images, and determining proper positioning to best demonstrate areas of interest.
Prepare and administer contrast media and medications in accordance with State and Federal regulations.
All DRTs must be knowledgeable in digital radiography(DR), and picture archiving and communications systems (PACS).
Performs routine to moderately complex radiographic examination procedures.
Responsible for maintaining the established standard of imaging quality and provide supervision and assistance as required for Radiologic Technology students who may be assigned to the Diagnostic Imaging Department.
Performs examinations of the head, trunk and extremities for routine examinations and for diagnosis of illness and/or injuries of accident victims.
Operates portable(C-arms) and fixed(RF and hybrid rooms) fluoroscopy equipment in the operating room and other locations.
Responsible to the radiologists and supervisor for the quality and quantity of radiographic exams performed to assure a high level of acceptability of radiographs while minimizing patient dosage and reducing costs.
Prepares patient for exam, setting up technical factors, performing Quality assurance and other related items associated with producing quality examinations.
Performs basic monitoring practices (BP, placement of EKG leads, O2, Pulse Oximetry, ProPac, sterile technique) related to radiography including emergency cardiac arrest procedures (CPR).
Maintains records and files of exams performed on patients.
Responsible for cleanliness and stocking adequate levels of supplies in assigned areas. Must report equipment malfunction in a timely manner to the supervisor or lead technologist.
Incumbent must be professional, cooperative and be able to work with other employees.
Performs daily maintenance of head and body phantoms.
Administer contrast material, completes forms (Patient Information Sheet, Consent form) under the direction of the radiologist, according to protocols.
Maximize patient throughput by contacts with escort, ward secretaries, nursing personnel, etc.
Work Schedule: Wednesday through Saturday 8:00am-6:30pm, or Sunday through Wednesday 8:00am-6:30pm

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Certification: All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI).
Education: Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE).
English Language Proficiency: DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d).
Grade Determinations: Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist (Computed Tomography) GS-10
Experience: At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-9), directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs:
Knowledge of radiation protection standards, devices and techniques, including concepts of accumulated dosage, dose monitoring, and genetic changes.
Ability to utilize advanced imaging software that supports complex imaging programs and recognize changes in equipment and procedures that might result in increased exposures, and ability to recommend methods to prevent such exposures.
Knowledge of basic physics including concepts of energy, electric power, magnetic fields, and properties of x-ray, to understand the operation of the equipment.
Knowledge and skill in positioning of patients for a wide variety of highly complex imaging (CT, MRI, IR, ultrasound, mammography) studies.]
Preferred Experience: At least two years of working Computed Tomography or two years working Interventional Radiology.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-10.
