The MRI Lead Technologist has the overall responsibility for the coordination and performance of the MRI Department. The incumbent works closely with the Supervisory MRI Tech, MRI radiologists, clinicians and clerical staff to assure optimum quality control, efficient coordination of activities, quality diagnostic exam results, and patient satisfaction. The incumbent will work closely with all imaging modalities to coordinate coverage and need for additional procedures within other modalities.

Duties

Duties and responsibilities include, but are not limited to: Develops and maintains an on-call schedule for MRI technologists. Determines staffing requirements based on past, present, and future workload patterns and develops the weekly/monthly technologist schedules. Organizes staff work assignments, including lunch and break rotations. Reports absences and tardiness to Supervisory Radiologic Technologist. Recommends the reassignment of techs if necessary because of call-ins or increased/decreased workload. Coordinates leave requests i.e. vacation schedules, to maintain optimal staffing levels. Ensures training of new technologists in ALL aspects of MRI protocols. Develops formal orientation, training, and evaluation programs. Recommends, coordinates and evaluates new or modified procedures/protocols in accordance with radiologist oversight. Instructs other technologists on specialized tasks and new/modified procedures and policies. Coordinates the proper technologist rotation to all MRI scanners to maintain competency on all equipment and procedures. Performs and maintains a monitoring system for quality assurance purpose and complies with the FDA safety standards regarding ferrous objects and cardiac pacemakers prior to these people entering the environment of the 5-gauss magnetic field. Must maintain CPR certification. Evaluates work performance of all Technologists and submits an annual performance summary to the Supervisory Technologist. Works closely with the Supervisory Technologist to evaluate candidates for employment, promotion, disciplinary action, etc. Provides continuing education training as needed. Assumes the Supervisory Technologist duties in their absence. Ensures that adequate quantities of supplies are available for all modality rooms to meet workload demands through a systemized process of ordering, receipt and inventory control. Assures that procedure rooms are stocked with necessary supplies always with special attention to emergent equipment and supplies. Manages inventory ensuring expiring supplies are rotated out of inventory. Coordinates new product evaluation. Recommends methods and products to reduce costs and/or increase quality. Serves as the liaison between Radiology and Biomedical Engineering for repairs. Tracks and maintains records of repair histories and vendor performance for all Imaging equipment. Recommends equipment improvements, repairs, upgrades, etc. Participates in developing specifications for new equipment requests. Develops and maintains a quality control program. Works closely with the schedulers to optimize room utilization while maintaining flexibility for add on inpatient and outpatient cases. Oversees all Imaging exams done within MRI at SAVAHCS. The incumbent must be aware of all imaging protocols required for each exam and must be able to recognize any inaccuracies. The incumbent must be able to offer suggestions and train the technical staff if needed to fix these problems and prevent further inaccuracies. Assures that patient images are properly identified by technologist staff. This is essential so that mistaken identity of patient images does not occur. All technologists must verify the patient I.D by asking each patient their full name, full social security number or their date of birth. Troubleshoot PACS related issues; works closely with PACS administrators to resolve issues. Oversees the registration and editing of patient exams in the computerized information system/VISTA, transferring images to PACS or other archive. The incumbent will train any new staff and help current staff to maintain competence in all aspects of records maintenance. The incumbent will periodically audit medical records of past patients to assure that the technical staff is following all established protocols for documentation. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Certification. All applicants must be certified in general radiologic technology by the American Registry of Radiologic Technology (ARRT) (R). Advanced ARRT certification is required for assignments that include computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Education. Completion of a full-time training course of at least 24 months in duration (or the equivalent) in a post-high school diagnostic radiologic technology program, evidenced by a certificate or an associate degree, accredited by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT) or from [other accrediting agencies as recognized by the Department of Education (DOE). English Language Proficiency. DRTs must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), and 7407(d). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: Lead Diagnostic Radiologic Technologist GS-10 Experience. At least one year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level directly related to the position being filled that demonstrates the clinical competencies described at that level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: The candidate must demonstrate all of the following technical KSAs: Ability to provide technical oversight and assign personnel and tasks to be accomplished in a manner that assures completion of the workload utilizing the personnel to the greatest advantage thus providing the optimal level of patient care within the workday. Ability to plan, direct, and distribute work assignments to DRTs at lower grade levels. Skill in instructing and training DRTs on newly acquired equipment. Ability to plan and project staffing needs. Skill to independently perform general and specialized diagnostic radiologic procedures in advanced levels of complex treatment situations. The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-10. Physical Requirements: Light to Moderate lifting and carrying, up to 35 pounds; straight pulling; reaching above shoulders; use of both hands and fingers required; walking, standing; crawling; kneeling; ability for rapid mental and muscular coordination simultaneously; near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4; depth perception; ability to distinguish basic colors and shades of colors; hearing (aid permitted).
