This position is in located in the Audiology and Speech Pathology Service at the Jesse Brown VA Medical Center, Chicago, IL and and serves as a section chief while supervising staff, plan schedule and assign work.

Duties

DUTIES INCLUDE: Clinical: a. Uses knowledge of contemporary speech-language pathology practice; b. Exercises independent clinical judgment and adapts clinical procedures and techniques to accommodate age-specific and unique patient conditions, needs, and expectations; c. Consults with physicians and other health care practitioners related to diagnostic evaluation and treatment; d. Evaluates patients to determine nature, type, and severity of hearing, balance, speech, language, voice, cognitive, and swallowing disorders using a full range of diagnostic tests and techniques, past, family, and social history, record review, and consultation with family and other health care practitioners; e. Plans, coordinates, and implements a full range of patient-focused treatment services designed to optimize function; f. Documents in the medical record: evaluates, diagnosis and clinical opinion, treatment plans, outcomes of treatment, changes in functional status, and patient/family education; g. Attends interdisciplinary team meetings; participates with other health care practitioners to address the global needs of the patient, advises on diagnosis and treatment. Education: a. Provides orientation/training of medical staff; b. Assists in orientation and training of new staff; c. Assists in the training and supervision of students, trainees, and fellows, providing feedback on progress toward established educational goals; d. Keeps current with theory and practice through continuing education programs, journals, textbooks, and other literature, and in-service programs; e. Provides patient and family education including informed consent. Administrative: a.Functions as a team leader and is responsible for ensuring that work assignments of the other members of the clinical team are carried out by performing a range of duties such as distributing and balancing workload among employees in accordance with established workflow or job specialization. b. In the absence of the Chief, Audiology and Speech Pathologist, incumbent oversees the professional practice of peers. c. Articulate and communicate assignments, projects, problems to be solved, actionable events, and objectives, as well as advise on work methods, practices, and procedures; d. Coach the clinical team in the selection and application of appropriate problem solving methods and techniques; e. Monitors and reports on status and progress of work, evaluate program quality to ensure that methods, deadlines and quality have been met; and make adjustments to accomplish the workload in accordance with established priorities. f. Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Education: Must possess a a master's degree, or its equivalent, in speech-language pathology, communication disorders or a directly related field from an accredited college or university and one year of creditable experience or A doctoral degree in speech-language pathology, communication disorders and sciences or a related field, from an accredited college or university. Transcripts Require Licensure: must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license to practice in a United States state, territory, commonwealth, or the District of Columbia. English Language Proficiency. Audiologist candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English as required by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f). May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). All persons employed in VHA in this occupational series or in another occupational series that are also performing the duties as described in the qualification standard on the effective date of this qualification standard are considered to have met all qualification requirements for the grade held, including positive education and licensure. Grade Determinations: In addition to the basic requirements, the following criteria must be met for the GS-13 grade level. In addition to the basic requirements at the GS-12 level, completion of one year of professional experience comparable to the GS-12 grade level. Must demonstrate all of the following KSAs: (a) Skill to translate contemporary and evidence-based speech pathology practice knowledge into clinical procedures. (b) Skill in effective conflict resolution. (c) Ability to analyze organizational and operational problems to develop and implement solutions. (d) Ability to provide clinical and administrative oversight and ensure that section activities are aligned with management goals and objectives.
