This position is located within the Audiology and Speech Pathology Service (ASPS) at the Jesse Brown VAMC (JBVAMC). The duties and responsibilities are carried out throughout the medical center, including all clinical and patient care areas within the service, including and the Lakeside, ABJ, Chicago Heights, and Auburn Gresham CBOCs, and off-site teleworking. The incumbent is also the Speech Pathology Education Coordinator, and these responsibilities will occupy at least 25% of their time.
Duties
Major Duties: In addition to clinical duties of a staff Speech-Language Pathologist (SLP) this position has special clinical program responsibilities for the coordinating and ongoing operation of all aspects of the student training program to ensure local, VISN, national and individual affiliate guidelines are followed. The SLP serves as an Education Coordinator for SLP students and clinical fellows, both paid through OAA and unpaid WOC students at all levels of education, from undergraduate to graduate level students. The Education Coordinator also handles requests for shadowing outside of our affiliation's agreements.
Duties include:
Uses knowledge of contemporary speech-language pathology practice.
Exercises independent clinical judgment and adapts clinical procedures and techniques to accommodate age specific and unique patient conditions, needs, and expectations.
Consults with physicians and other health care practitioners related to diagnostic evaluation and treatment.
Evaluates patients to determine nature, type, and severity of hearing and balance, speech, language, voice, cognitive, and swallowing disorders using a full range of diagnostic tests and techniques, past, family, and social history, record review, and consultation with family and other health care practitioners.
Plans, coordinates, and implements a full range of patient focused treatment services designed to optimize function.
Documents in the medical record; evaluates, diagnosis and clinical opinion, treatment plans, outcomes of treatment, changes in functional status, and patient/family education.
Attends interdisciplinary team meetings; participates with other health care practitioners to address the global needs of the patient, advises on diagnosis and treatment.
Responsible for the oversight of the ASPS Education Program for SLP.
Works with JB VAMC Education service, OAA and University Clinical Education Coordinators to establish and maintain affiliation agreements.
Collaborates with the ASPS Service Chief and Program Managers and other designated staff to prepare the OAA and Education Office requests for trainees and funding.
Coordinates and conducts interviews and makes recommendations for selection to the Service Chief for competitive positions.
Collaborates and coordinates with the SLP clinicians, Human Resources, Credentialing and Privileging and ASPS Service Chief nd Program Managers during processing and onboarding.
Performs additional duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday through Friday, 8:00AM to 4:30 PM.
Telework: Ad-hoc, as determined by the agency policy.

Qualifications
Basic Requirements: The following are the basic requirements and qualifications for appointment as a Speech-Language Pathologist.
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency Requirement - Per VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Chapter 3, Section A, Paragraph 3j: No person will be appointed under authority of 38 U.S.C., chapter 73 or 74, to serve in a direct patient-care capacity in VHA who is not proficient in written and spoken English.
Education Requirement - You must possess a master's degree or its equivalent in speech-language pathology, communication disorders, or a directly related field from an accredited college or university and possess one (1) year of creditable experience. -OR-A doctoral degree in speech-language pathology, communication disorders and sciences or a related field, from an accredited college or university. Licensure: A Speech-Language Pathologist must hold a full, current, and unrestricted license in a State, Territory or Commonwealth of the United States, or the District of Columbia. Copy of licensure required.
In addition to the basic requirement above, candidates must have the following experience and demonstrate the required knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) as per the below to qualify for this position at the GS-13 grade level.
Specialized Experience - Speech-Language Pathologist- Education Coordinator GS-13: At least 1 year of professional speech-language pathologist experience equivalent to the GS-12 level directly related to the position being filled. In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the following professional KSAs.
1. Knowledge of scientific principles and contemporary, evidence-based practice in differential diagnosis and trea5tment of speech, language, voice, swallowing and cognitive-communication disorders as it relates to a specialized clinical program.
2. Skill in prioritizing program goals and objectives.
3. Ability to build consensus among clinical team members with divergent backgrounds, interests and points of view.
4. Ability to gather and evaluate outcome data to determine program quality and effectiveness.
5. Ability to serve as a resource to other health care providers regarding a specialized clinical program.
