The Edward Hines Jr, VA Hospital- Hines, Illinois- is seeking a Physician (Nephrologist) to manage the patient population with renal conditions, assessments and medication management within the agency. A Recruitment/Relocation Incentive may be authorized to a highly qualified candidate. Education and length of practice are considered through a formal pay-setting process to determine the final compensable salary (Base Pay + Market Pay)

Duties

The kidney transplant program at the Edward Hines, Jr. VA Hospital now offers veterans the benefit of kidney transplantation and is the eighth VA Kidney Transplant Program in the country. Renal Transplantation comprises a comprehensive, team-oriented process that includes medical nephrology, pharmacy, social work and infectious disease specialists. The Transplant Nephrologist is well versed in all aspects of the Transplant Operation, as well as post-operative immunosuppression management. The following duties and responsibilities are not intended to be all inclusive: Carry out physician duties independently and in a professional manner, without immediate or continuous supervision. Generate treatment orders and observe facility policies and procedures. Document, verify and ensure implementation of orders. Perform acute patient assessment; obtain and monitor vital signs; evaluate data and intervene as appropriate; perform therapies as assigned. Supervise medications and intravenous solutions; records maintenance and reporting outcomes according to facility policy; participate in emergency care, as needed Provide and document pre-ESRD, transplant support and other pertinent patient education according to facility policy. Comply with all governing standards as required for inpatient and outpatient treatment; maintain all required competencies and certifications. Utilize the established MD process to make recommendations for patient care; evaluate delivery of care and communicate to appropriate facility personnel and any relevant data to the multidisciplinary teams to facilitate continuity of care Cover all on-call duties as scheduled or as required Assist proactively with inventory needs; monitor water quality treatment system, culturing, and disinfection of equipment following all infection control policies Participate in facility committees. Precept new medical staff as indicated. Submit accurate time records, treatment records and other supporting documentation per VISN and Hines provider policy. Understand and follow facility employment policies and procedures. Document/Communicate estimated time of arrival and confirm assigned patient's consent for treatment, treatment orders, presence and patency of vascular access, overall patient condition. Communicate and document changes in patient treatment plan and any other pertinent clinical information with the appropriate unit staff prior to, during and after patient care in order to assure continuity of patient care Communicate patient access complications with the designated staff so appropriate corrective actions can be taken Notify Clinical Manager and/or Charge Nurse of any required inventory and equipment needs. As a Transplant Nephrologist working in the Medicine Service Line (MSL), you will: See patients in a clinical setting and perform required medical procedure assessments and examinations. Execute commitment to patient care and take an active role in the medical center. Possess clinical and administrative skills. Participate in on-call rotation on weekends and holidays. Provide guidance to rotating residents, fellows and medical students. Maintain continued ongoing self-improvement and redesign. Maintain active teaching service for residents and students Provide feedback to residents re performance measures Provided Feedback and direction to transplant trainee's, nurse practitioners and PA's regarding performance and proficiencies. Maintain Transplant Nephrologist quality measures. Assist Transplant team with OR scheduling and SICU bed issues. Maintain liaison with Loyola by attendance at faculty meetings and conferences, as required. Assess, evaluate and examine transplant patients, in pre and post clinical conditions. Provide consultation on Wards. Provide on-call services. Other duties as assigned within the clinical privileges to meet the needs of the transplant team and medical center. Work Schedule: Monday-Friday (8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.) VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package. VHA Physician Total Rewards. Qualifications

To qualify for this position, you must meet the basic requirements as well as any additional requirements (if applicable) listed in the job announcement. Applicants pending the completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physician(s) in VA who met the requirements for appointment under the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements of the occupation. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Degree of doctor of medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Department of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed. Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States, or in the District of Columbia. Residency Training: Physicians must have completed residency training, approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification. (NOTE: VA physicians involved in academic training programs may be required to be board certified for faculty status.) Approved residencies are: (1) Those approved by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), b) OR [(2) Those approved by the American Osteopathic Association (AOA),OR (3) Other residencies (non-US residency training programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified practice in the United States), which the local Medical Staff Executive Committee deems to have provided the applicant with appropriate professional training and believes has exposed the physician to an appropriate range of patient care experiences. Residents currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA accredited residency training programs and who would otherwise meet the basic requirements for appointment are eligible to be appointed as "Physician Resident Providers" (PRPs). PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (i.e., not a training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee-basis. PRPs are not considered independent practitioners and will not be privileged; rather, they are to have a "scope of practice" that allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision. Additionally, surgery residents in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs. Proficiency in spoken and written English. Preferred Experience: 2+ years experience in treating patients for renal conditions. Ability to effectively communicate both orally and in writing. Board Certification by the American Board of Internal Medicine is highly preferred. Board Certification by the American Board of Nephrology is highly desirable. Physical Requirements: The work is mostly sedentary and requires some standing, bending, and carrying light items. The incumbent must have the ability to interact with staff, patients, and other services.

Education

Degree of Doctor of Medicine or an equivalent degree resulting from a course of education in allopathic medicine or osteopathic medicine. The degree must have been obtained from an institution whose accreditation was in place for the year in which the course of study was completed. Approved schools are:
  1. Schools of medicine accredited by the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME) for the year in which the degree was granted, or
  2. Schools of osteopathic medicine approved by the Commission on Osteopathic College Accreditation of the American Osteopathic Association for the year in which the degree was granted.
  3. For foreign medical graduates not covered in (1) or (2) above, facility officials must verify with the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates (ECFMG) that the applicant has met requirements for certification, and must obtain a copy of the ECFMG certificate, if claimed by the applicant. [If the applicant does not claim an ECFMG certificate, facility officials must still confirm that the medical school meets (or met) ECFMG eligibility requirements for the year the candidate graduated.]
NOTE: The Under Secretary of Health or designee in the VHA Central Office may approve the appointment under authority of 38 U.S.C. 7405 of a physician graduate of a school of medicine not covered above if the candidate is to be assigned to a research, academic, or administrative position with no patient care responsibilities. The appointment will be made only in exceptional circumstances where the candidate's credentials clearly demonstrate high professional attainment or expertise in the specialty area.
