This position is in the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Field Organization, Plains Area (PA), Range Management Research Unit located in Las Cruces, NM.
In this position, you will be responsible for integrating vegetation and soil databases with web-based analysis and decision making tools to support analysis of vegetation, climate and soil erosion data in agroecosystems at landscape to regional and national levels.
Duties
Discovers ways to link multiple, often disparate data types in databases and websites and web-based tools.
Uses computational biology and related technology to apply algorithms to identify requirements and implement visualization techniques to solve large-scale problems in agroecosystems.
Expands interoperability of monitoring database based on interactions with partners and works with research scientists to develop new uses for vegetation and soil erosion data.
Performs analyses of patterns in soil erosion and vegetation data with respect to environmental variables at landscape to regional to national scales.
Advises scientists on appropriate methods for analyses of local and cloud-based data and their integration with experimental data from network research sites.
Assists in development of web-based user interfaces for accessibility of soil erosion, vegetation and environmental data for use by natural resource scientists, land managers, and stakeholders.
Develops analytical packages (e.g., R, Python) needed to support scientific objectives and designs, develops, and integrates components of web-based interfaces to analyze data and to execute programs within networked systems.

Qualifications
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
Basic Requirements
Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.
OR
Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
AND
In addition to the basic requirements above, all applicants must also meet the following minimum qualification requirements:
Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-09 which is directly related to the work of this position, and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience developing web-based tools or web applications for biological data; coordinating and implementing data life cycle activities; and integrating existing databases for analysis of biological data.
OR
Education: Successful completion of 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, if related. Related degrees may include environmental science, ecology, biology, statistics, bioinformatics, computer science, or computational biology, or similar fields.
OR
A combination of Ph.D. education and specialized experience as described above.
