This position is in the Agricultural Research Service (ARS), Field Organization, Plains Area (PA), Range Management Research Unit located in Las Cruces, NM. In this position, you will be responsible for integrating existing databases and identifying and implementing procedures for analysis of vegetation, climate and soil data in agroecosystems as landscape to regional and national levels.

Duties

Discovers ways to link multiple, often disparate data types in databases and websites and web-based tools. Uses computational biology and related technology to apply algorithms to identify requirements and implement visualization techniques to solve large-scale problems in agroecosystems. Provides web content and manages translation of climate information for articles and podcasts targeted for a range of audiences from other scientists to land managers to the interested public. Provides guidance and support in organizing, analyzing, locating, and evaluating a wide variety of biophysical, climatic and geographical information across various levels of biological organization. Synthesizes and analyzes biophysical and climatic data to support climate-informed decision making by livestock producers, resource managers, and other shareholders. Implements QA/QC (quality assurance/quality control) standards, oversight of data documentation protocols, and maintenance of archival and retrieval protocols. Implements, shares and evaluates the efficacy of rangeland related climate technological solutions including precision technologies (i.e. water level sensors, virtual fencing, LoRa WAN technologies) and agrovoltaics implementation.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below. Basic Requirements Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. AND In addition to the basic requirements above, all applicants must also meet the following minimum qualification requirements: Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are: Qualifying experience for GS-11 includes one year of specialized experience comparable to GS-09 which is directly related to the work of this position, and which has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position. For this position, specialized experience is experience managing the maintenance or development of climate decision-support tools; creating Geographic Information Systems to share scientific information; and evaluating precision agriculture technologies to inform project decisions. OR Education: Successful completion of 3 years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree, if related. Related degrees may include Genetics, Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, or Statistics. OR A combination of Ph.D. education and specialized experience as described above Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
