You will work to gain practical work experience that augments your academic course of study.
Duties
If you are selected as an Accounting and Budget Intern, you will work with higher graded staff in support of office programs and activities to gain practical work experience that augments training in an academic course of study.
Your duties may include:
Assisting in collecting and analyzing data and reports;
Assisting in reviewing programs and functional areas to assess compliance with applicable laws, regulations, policies and procedures;
Assisting in conducting surveys of programs and activities to gain an understanding of the nature of the program;
Assisting in performing a variety of financial system and accounting transaction reviews;
Assisting in examining and testing operational records and controls to obtain sufficient and reliable evidence of system reliability;
Assisting in writing reports that identify non-compliance with regulations, inefficient operations or improper practices;
utilizing Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and PowerPoint to create a variety of reports, spreadsheets, memorandums or financial documents;
Communicating information both verbally and in writing to management officials;
Assisting in the preparation of working papers;
Performing other administrative duties as assigned.
Requirements
- You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
- You must be able to pass a background investigation and credit check and drug testing. You will be subject to random drug testing.
- You must be registered for the Selective Service, if applicable.
- You must meet all qualification requirements by the closing date of this announcement. Your application package must support your responses to the questionnaire.
- You will be required to work a minimum of 20 hours a week during the school year.
- If selected you must complete and sign a Pathways Participant Agreement and will be required to provide the OIG Pathways Program Officer with a copy of your transcript verifying continuous enrollment, GPA and grade requirements each semester.
- You must maintain a GPA of 3.0 or better for the duration of this internship (failure to meet this requirement will result in immediate termination).
- The student will participate in an OIG-wide mentorship program.
Qualifications
Basic Qualifications
Must be at least 16 years of age.
Must be enrolled or accepted for enrollment in a Technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school, at a qualifying educational institution on a half-time or full-time basis.
Must be in good academic standing with a cumulative GPA (grade point average) of 3.0 or better (must provide a transcript and proof of enrollment/acceptance letter); these standards will be in effect for the duration of the internship.
Must maintain enrollment/continue education throughout the duration of employment under the Pathways Program.
Minimum Qualifications: In addition to meeting the Basic Qualifications stated above, you must also meet the minimum qualifications for the appropriate grade level, or applicable general or specialized experience, or a combination of both
To qualify for the GS-4 level, completed 2 full academic years of post-high school study pursing a degree in accounting, finance or related field or an associate's degree in accounting ,finance or a related field (one year of full-time academic study is defined as 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours in a college or university; or at least 20 hours of classroom instruction per week for approximately 36 weeks in a business, secretarial or technical school)
To qualify for the GS-5 level, you must have completed 4 academic years of post-high school education leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree in accounting, finance or in a related field such as: business administration, and/or public administration that includes 24 semester hours in accounting (the 24 semester hours may include up to 6 hours in credit in business law)

You must provide an UNOFFICIAL copy of your transcript or course listing with your application to verify enrollment as well as meeting GPA and grade requirements. Failure to provide a copy of your transcript or course listing will disqualify your application.

Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the above education requirements if you can show that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States. It is your responsibility to timely provide such evidence by submitting proof of creditability of education as evaluated by a credentialing agency with your application materials.
