Duties

Responsible for the analysis, configuration, and implementation of IT security for local area networks. Serves as an expert resource for personal computers, local area networks, databases, and other information system technology. Plans, organizes, and analyzes highly complex and state-of-the-art local area and wide area networks for Central Office divisions, regional offices and institutions. Responsible for analyzing and reviewing user access and accounts, reviewing and analyzing network and system logs, developing effective file access security permissions and reviewing and evaluating procedures for complete system backups. Responsible for coordinating Bureau-wide networked database management systems relating to IT security.

Qualifications

To be considered for the position, you must meet the following qualification requirements: Education: GS-12 and GS-13: There is no substitution of education for specialized experience at this grade level. Experience: GS-12 and GS-13: You must have Information Technology (IT) related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below. Attention to detail - Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail. Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services. Oral communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately. Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations. AND Specialized Experience: GS-12 and GS-13: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade level in federal service. To be creditable, this experience must have equipped the applicant with the particular qualifications to perform successfully the duties of the position, and must typically be in or related to the position to be filled. Such experience is typically gained in the IT field or through the performance of work where the primary concern is IT. Some examples of this qualifying experience are: GS-12: Experience troubleshooting network issues. Experience managing the Bureau of Prisons personal computers and mainframes systems, including security baselines, operating systems, applications, and hardware. Experience training staff on proper security measures. GS-13: Experience diagnosing and assessing system vulnerabilities and correcting them. Experience teaching computer skills, LAN access, and applications to staff of all ability levels. Experience analyzing telecommunications hardware or software security problems, database server hardware or software problems, or mainframe software problems. AND Selective Placement Factor: GS-12 and GS-13: Applicants applying for this position, MUST also possess the following Selective Factors. In the event you do not possess the Selective Factors, you will be found ineligible for the position. Applicants must have knowledge and technical experience of IT hardware and software configurations, thus providing a solid foundation for the ability to dispense IT security techniques. Experience in developing and analyzing IT security reports and vulnerability management scans; Experience in identifying, reporting, mitigating, and resolving system vulnerabilities using a variety of hardware and software tools; AND Experience in analyzing IT security policies, standards and procedures.
