Thank you for your interest in our Senior Social Worker-Substance Use Disorder (SUD) position located at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital in Madison, WI. This position will be assigned to the Addictive Disorders Treatment Program (ADTP) in Social Work Service. The SUD Program consists of an intensive outpatient program, medication management, individual and group outpatient services, and at times inpatient consultation.

Incorporates complex multiple causation in differential diagnosis and treatment of veteran patients, including making psychosocial and psychiatric diagnosis within approved clinical privileges or scope of practice. SUD Senior Social Worker provides clinical care including individual, group and family psychotherapy and advanced level case management interventions used in the treatment of veteran with substance use disorders. Develops and implements methods for measuring effectiveness of social work practice and services in specialty areas, utilizing outcome evaluations to improve treatment services. Able to demonstrate the ability to design changes based on empirical findings. Will demonstrate the ability to teach and mentor staff and students in SUD and to provide supervision for licensure or specialty certifications. Identifies and provides training for ongoing clinical competencies for staff in ADTP in collaboration with the Program Coordinator. The incumbent will perform other duties as assigned. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES REQUIRED BY THE POSITION Skill in a range of specialized interventions and treatment modalities used in specialty treatment programs or with special patient populations. This includes individual, group, and/or family counseling or psychotherapy and advanced level psychosocial and/or case management. Ability to incorporate complex multiple causation in differential diagnosis and treatment within approved clinical privileges or scope of practice. Knowledge in developing and implementing methods for measuring effectiveness of social work practice and services in the specialty area, utilizing outcome evaluations to improve treatment services and to design system changes. Ability to provide specialized consultation to colleagues and students on the psychosocial treatment of patients in the service delivery area, as well as role modeling effective social work practice skills. Ability to expand clinical knowledge in the social work profession, and to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines pertaining to the service delivery area. Work Schedule: Full-time, Monday-Friday, 8:00am-4:30pm with occasional evening and rare weekend. Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d), No person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English. You must be proficient in basic written and spoken English in order to meet the requirements of this position. SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: You must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-6) in the Federal service, that equipped me with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled. Specialized experience includes performing a wide variety of duties in support of counseling, guidance and related social services work in social, employment assistance or similar programs; works with emergency service providers, telecommunication companies, and others; gathers information from individuals to relaying to appropriate medical/emergency personnel (i.e. medical providers, law enforcement, emergency dispatch personnel, etc.); experience communicating clearly and relaying pertinent facts and circumstances; keeping accurate, detailed records. To receive credit for this experience, it must be well documented in your resume. ~OR~ EDUCATION: At least one (1) full year of graduate level education that included course directly related to the work of this position. This education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university. NOTE: Transcripts must be submitted with your application materials. Education cannot be credited without documentation. ~OR~ COMBINATION: An equivalent combination of specialized experience and successfully completed graduate education with courses directly related to the work of this position and that demonstrates my ability to perform the duties of this position. Quality Ranking Factors are skills, knowledge, abilities, or other worker characteristics which could be expected to result in superior performance on the job. Quality ranking factors will not be used for screening, but may be used as ranking criteria. Applicants with higher proficiency levels may rank above those with lower proficiency levels on a quality ranking factor. Grade Determinations: GS-12 Experience, Education, and Licensure. The candidate must have at least two years of experience post advanced practice clinical licensure and should be in a specialized area of social work practice of which, one year must be equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Senior social workers have experience that demonstrates possession of advanced practice skills and judgment. Senior social workers are experts in their specialized area of practice. Senior social workers may have certification or other post-masters training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship or equivalent supervised professional experience in a specialty. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs): Skill in a range of specialized interventions and treatment modalities used in specialty treatment programs or with special patient populations. Senior social workers must be licensed or certified by a state at the advanced practice level which included an advanced generalist or clinical examination, unless they are grandfathered by the state in which they are licensed to practice at the advanced practice level (except for licenses issued in California, which administers its own clinical examination for advanced practice), and they must be able to provide supervision for licensure. Preferred Experience: 2 years of Substance Use Disorder (SUD) experience is required.
