The Suicide Prevention Social Work Coordinator, (SPC), facilitates implementation of suicide prevention strategies at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans Hospital and Clinics through education, monitoring and coordination of activities to ensure that appropriate measures are being taken to prevent suicide in our patient population.

The Social Worker Suicide Prevention Coordinator (SPC) works to coordinate administrative, patient and personnel activities for this program. The SPC follows guidance and requirements found in the directives, memorandums, notices and program guides from the Office of Mental Health and Suicide Prevention. Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Monitoring Veterans determined to be at high risk for self-harm.
Providing education to all front line and clinical staff regarding risk factors and protective factors for suicide.
Educating clinical staff regarding lethal means safety and safety planning with their patients.
Networking with community partners.
Serving as a subject matter expert on suicide prevention strategies for facility staff and the community.
Providing timely and accurate responses to all action items regarding suicide prevention programming in collaboration with the Suicide Prevention Program Manager and the Mental Health Service Line Chief.
Work Schedule: Full-Time, Monday - Friday, 8:00AM - 4:30PM
Telework: Available. Upon Supervisor approval and needs of the Service Line.

Qualifications
Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Be a citizen of the United States. Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. ? 7403(f).
Education: Must have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. (COPY OF TRANSCRIPTS WITH DEGREE AWARDED DATE REQUIRED)
Note: A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work.
Licensure: Must be licensed or certified by a state at the advanced practice level, which included an advanced generalist or clinical examination, unless they are grandfathered by the state in which they are licensed to practice at the advanced practice level (except for licenses issued in California, which administers its own clinical examination for advanced practice) and must be able to provide supervision for licensure. May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).
Grade Determinations:
Social Worker (Program Coordinator), GS-12
Experience and Education. One year of experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills and judgment, demonstrating progressively more professional competency. Candidate may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience.
Licensure/Certification. Social worker program coordinator must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level, and must be able to provide supervision for licensure.
Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate all of the following KSAs:
(a) Knowledge of program coordination and administration which includes consultation, negotiation, and monitoring.
(b) Knowledge and ability to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines for the program.
(c) Ability to supervise multidisciplinary staff assigned to the program.
(d) Skill in organizing work, setting priorities, meeting multiple deadlines, and evaluating assigned program area(s).
(e) Ability to provide training, orientation, and guidance within clinical practice
Preferred Experience: Mental health treatment and suicide risk assessment experience

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-12.
Physical Requirements: Must be able to sit at a desk working at a computer, engage in light to moderate physical activity including sitting, walking, bending, and carrying supplies. Applicants must be able to perform primarily light and sedentary duties with occasionally moderate physical demands, exercise patience, and control emotions, with reasonable accommodation if necessary, without endangering the health and safety of the applicant or others. This position requires driving. Must have a valid drivers license.
