To provide social work oversight on the medicine units, including the CLC and short-stay rehabilitation units as well. The incumbent social work supervisor is responsible for the professional and administrative management of all inpatient related operations within the medical social work service The incumbent also provide direct clinical services and is expected to maintain a sizeable caseload.

The incumbent supervises a group of employees performing work at various GS levels up to their own grade and provides administrative, technical, and clinical supervision necessary for accomplishing the work of the unit.
Performs the administrative and personnel management function relative to staff supervised.
Incumbent will have established guidelines and performance expectations for staff, clearly communicated through
the formal employee performance management system.
Observes workers' performance; demonstrates and conducts work performance critiques.
Provides informal feedback and periodically evaluates employee performance. Incumbent works to resolves informal complaints and grievances.
Develops work improvement plans, recommending personnel actions as necessary.
Provides advice and counsel to workers related to work and administrative matters.
Effects disciplinary measures as appropriate to the authority delegated in this area.
Reviews and approves or disapproves leave requests.
Incumbent assures that subordinates are trained and fully comply with the provisions of the safety regulations.
Incumbent supervises employees to accomplish the work of the organization unit.
Exercises supervisor authorities and responsibilities involving work assignment and review, as we!l as the administrative and personnel management functions relative to the staff supervised.
The incumbent will develop a data driven continuous quality improvement program with established goals and outcomes to evaluate and document social work inpatient effectiveness.
Manages the daily operation of social worker inpatient care and provides accountability for the program effectiveness and modification of service patterns to enhance customer satisfaction.
The incumbent performs program analysis, development, review, research, design, and contact work as possible with various agencies (public, DOD, state, etc.}.
Performs work related to the review, monitoring, analysis, planning and assessment of various programs.
Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday 8:00 am to 4:30 pm

Qualifications
Basic Requirements
Citizenship: Be a citizen of the United States. (Non-citizens may be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3g this part.)
Education: Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the school of social work is fully accredited. Note: A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to the CSWE website to verify if that social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a master of social work.
Licensure: Persons hired or reassigned to social worker positions in the GS-185 series in VHA must be licensed or certified by a state to independently practice social work at the master's degree level.
English Language Proficiency: Social workers must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with VA Handbook 5005, Part II, chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j, this part
Grade Determinations: At the GS-12 grade, Supervisory Social Workers typically have significant personnel management responsibilities for a small to medium size professional and non-professional staff, including support staff and professional staff at the GS-11 grade level and below. They are responsible for the professional and administrative management of an area in a social work service, in a care line, or multiple facilities. They also provide direct clinical services with or without program coordination responsibilities
Experience, Education and Licensure. Individuals assigned as Supervisory Social Workers must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level and must be able to provide supervision for subordinate staff to qualify for licensure. Their experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills in a specialty area or in administration demonstrating progressively more professional competency and judgment. They may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience.
In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the professional KSAs below.Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Ability to independently organize work, set priorities, and meet multiple deadlines.
Knowledge and skill in management/administration, which includes supervision, consultation, negotiation, and monitoring.
Ability to ensure provision of clinical social work services by supervised social workers.
Ability to provide administrative supervision and clinical supervision, including supervision for social work licensure.

Physical Requirements: The social work duties include sedentary and ambulation (walking) throughout the medical center and in the community according to the demands of daily tasks. Light carrying, less than 15 pounds-may be required as part of duties related to storing or moving files. Working around moving objects or vehicles-required as part of daily ambulating within the medical center around patients who use motorized scooters and wheelchairs. Working along-duties require working along at intervals during the day (i.e., documenting progress notes, completing phone call, etc.). Reaching above shoulder may be required during daily task to access files located in overhead cabinets. Walking- required approximately 3-4 hours daily associated with walking from assigned office to outpatient clinics and other medical center departments as needed to complete duties of the position. Standing-required approximately 3-4 hours daily associated with walking from assigned office to outpatient clinics and other departments within the medical center as needed to complete duties of the position and filing patient records as needed.
