This position is part of the Organization of the Joint Chiefs of Staff. The incumbent will be responsible for providing research services, staff advice, and assistance to the Chairman and JS employees as they respond to a wide range of legislative actions.
Duties
As a Congressional Strategist and Research Specialist at the GS-0301-12 some of your typical work assignments may include:
Serve as the primary congressional advisor to the Special Assistant for Legislative Assistant to the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS).
Lead, author and manage the CJCS approved annual CJCS Congressional engagement strategy.
Perform assignments as Lead action officer for defense-related legislation that affects the interests of the CJCS, Joint Staff (JS), the Combatant Commanders, and the Services.
Research and conduct analyses of all Congressional activity, both defense and non-defense related.
Produce analytical and assessment documents for the CJCS and JS in support of mid-long range, short notice and crisis management Congressional engagement.
Assist the JS intern in the performance of his/her duties related to legislative proposals, congressional reports and congressional correspondence.

Qualifications
You may qualify at the GS-12 grade level, if you fulfill the following qualifications:
One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service:
Performing congressional and legislative research and analysis on Congressional hearings, meetings, and briefings to identify issues that impact policy and procedures.
Preparing and presenting briefing papers, position papers, face charts, congressional quotes, executive summaries to produce executive level products and meet the suspense.
Utilizing computer system operations, electronic database and web-based research to navigate legislative based sources to obtain archived material.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
Substitution of education may not be used in lieu of specialized experience for this grade level.
