Duties
As a Research Microbiologist you will:
Design, conduct, coordinate in-house and field laboratory assistance for outbreaks of bacterial diseases, and investigations of unexplained febrile illnesses, as well as for surveillance of these diseases.
Participate in determining requirements for mapping future program direction and long-range planning.
Conduct research on methods of molecular subtyping and strain virulence and prevalence of the etiologic agents of these diseases and develop molecular diagnostic methods for detection of target genes directly in clinical materials.
Communicate with a variety of in-house organizations, other government agencies, contractors, grantees, and/or private institutions on topics related to the subject of the study or investigation for the purpose of gaining information and corroborating findings.
Prepare written reports on scientific investigations, studies and projects, or apply knowledge of the technical rules and procedures applying to scientific projects and programs to maintain documentation and prepare analyses and reports of findings for tests and studies.
Supervise a small contingent of positions. Plan work to be accomplished by subordinates, set and adjust short-term priorities, and prepare schedules for completion of work, when necessary.

Basic Qualifications:
Degree: microbiology; or biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included at least 20 semester hours in microbiology and other subjects related to the study of microorganisms, and 20 semester hours in the physical and mathematical sciences combining course work in organic chemistry or biochemistry, physics, and college algebra, or their equivalent.
OR
Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in microbiology, biology, chemistry, or basic medical science that included courses as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify at the GS-14 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 grade level, which must include the following experience: leading, designing, and conducting laboratory research studies related to pathogenic bacterial strain surveillance, providing consultation and advice on the modification of existing theories or current technology and preparing findings for publication/presentation at scientific meetings.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
Education
