As a Test Safety Engineer in the Safety and Test Operations Division at Johnson Space Center (JSC), you will be responsible for conducting theoretical and experimental research to develop, assess, and verify design criteria, Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements, biomedical considerations, operational procedures, and engineering guidelines for the safe and successful integration of humans in ground test activities and advanced aerospace systems.
Duties
Partner with NASA project and organizational representatives to assess operational hazards and their controls through engineering design reviews, operational planning reviews, and hazard analysis reviews.
Conduct engineering, analysis, testing, risk management, and quality assurance functions for aeronautical and aerospace systems, including all program phases from concept through operational use.
Apply engineering, safety, and quality requirements to programs related to flight element testing, ground processing, or launch operations.
Assure safety programs and support systems are compliant with NASA and Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) requirements, and that all accepted risk conditions are documented and approved in the Test Readiness Review records.
Perform design assessments, safety assessments, and hazard analyses. Assist with providing system safety input and design changes to eliminate, reduce, or control hazards and negotiate final resolution at Test Readiness Review Boards.
Develop technical reports and analysis of results and conclusions to support risk-informed decision making. Recommend or initiate improvements to systems/operations to reduce hazards and facilitate safe and successful mission objectives.
Support Division safety analysis and mishap investigation processes to identify and address root and contributing causes. This role could include leading the investigation, providing safety and human factors expertise, or other support activities.

Qualifications
In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.
NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement.
To qualify for GS-12, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level:
Supporting senior engineers with safety, reliability, or quality engineering and assurance initiatives for aerospace systems or programs;
Assisting with technical reviews or risk assessments to evaluate engineering and assurance programs, using tools such as hazard analysis, failure modes and effects analysis, fault tree analysis, or probabilistic risk assessments;
Documenting and presenting findings and results to technical leaders or management.

Education
Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:
a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus; and that provided an in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations.
If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.
Degrees in engineering technology are
not considered qualifying for this position.
