About the Position: Serve as a Public Safety Telecommunicator for dispatching Fire, Emergency Medical Service (EMS), and Law Enforcement (LE) responders, monitoring alarms and activating Mass Notification Systems in Army Garrison Public Safety Answering Points (PSAPs) / 911 Centers.
Duties
As a Public Safety Telecommunicator (Office Automation), you are responsible for the following duties:
Responsible for the receipt and effective evaluation of 911 emergency calls.
Identify the determinant and level of response and provides this and any additional information to the responding units.
Transfer caller to proper agency as determined or dispatches a variety of emergency equipment to include police, fire, ambulance, Med-Evac, rescue or hazardous materials units.
Provide emergency medical dispatching (EMD) assistance to callers with medical emergencies using the local authority's emergency medical dispatch system.
Update information for medical, police and fire personnel en route to call.
Provide assistance to medical, police and fire personnel by acting as liaison between department personnel and other agencies.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- The incumbent will be required to demonstrate reasonable proficiency at locally established training guidelines on the use of E911, CAD, Land Mobile Radio (LMR), and station alerting software and equipment.
- Position is subject to shift work where the incumbent is required to work an alternate, rotating work schedule, which requires an uncommon tour of duty (including nights, weekends and holidays).
- Incumbent is required to work (mission essential) regardless of weather conditions or base closure and to report to the duty station at the regularly scheduled time.
- Incumbent may be required to wear a uniform.
- Incumbent must pass a pre-employment; fingerprint based criminal history investigation for any location that accesses Criminal Justice Information Systems.
- The Incumbent must pass a pre-employment and periodic physical.
- The incumbent is subject to initial and random urinalysis testing in accordance with agency guidelines.
- The incumbent is required to obtain and maintain a valid state driver’s license.
- The incumbent is required to obtain and maintain certification in: Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR).
- Incumbent must complete the Department of Defense Telecommunicator I and II or equivalent based on the program standards at the location assigned.
- Incumbent must complete State National Crime Information Center (NCIC) certification based on assigned location.
- Incumbent must complete the National Incident Management System (NIMS) IS 100,300, 700, 800, and 907 courses.
- Continuous current certification is a condition of employment. The incumbent is responsible for attaining continuing dispatch education (CDE) requirements through in-service training.
- The incumbent is required to obtain and maintain certification in: Emergency Medical Dispatch based on the program standards at the location assigned.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service which includes 1) Processing phones calls such as: non-emergency and emergency calls; 2) Operating dispatching equipment while communicating with callers, and 3) Monitoring alarms to initiate appropriate responses.
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this job, you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-06).
In addition to the requirement above, this position requires a typing proficiency of at least 40 words per minute (WPM) based on a 5 minute sample with 3 or fewer errors.
