About the Position:
As a Public Safety Dispatcher, you will provide emergency police, fire and medical services to the public by answering 911 calls and dispatching appropriate Emergency Medical Dispatch (EMD), Emergency Police Dispatch (EPD) and/or Emergency Fire Dispatch (EFD) while aiding callers with pre-arrival instructions.
Duties
Answer emergency 911 calls, and dispatch appropriate personnel and equipment.
Prioritize all incoming emergency and non-emergency calls.
Perform crisis intervention with distraught emergency callers during high-risk situations.
Access law enforcement databases for the purpose of obtaining driver's license data, vehicle registration data, identity data, criminal history and other highly sensitive law enforcement information.
Provide callers with advanced life support instructions to including Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), the Heimlich maneuver, emergency childbirth, opening an airway or controlling bleeding.
Create and maintain logs, reports and forms.
Requirements
- Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
- Must be able to type at least 40 words per minute.
- Must be able to obtain a successful background investigation.
- This position requires working rotating shifts, weekends and holidays.
- Incumbent will be required to train and certify through the state of Kansas on the Kansas Criminal Justice Information Computer (KCJIC) system.
- Within 6 months of appointment, must obtain and maintain the Basic Telecommunicator I and II (or equivalent) and DoD Hazmat Awareness level certification.
- Within 6 months of appointment,must obtain and maintain Basic Life Support (BLS) and Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)certification.
- Position is mission essential. In the event of severe weather conditions or other such emergency type situations the incumbent is required to report to work or remain at work as scheduled to support mission operations.
- Occasional travel (TDY) up to 5% may be required.

To qualify at the GS-06 level:
Specialized Experience: To qualify based on your experience, your resume must clearly describe at least one year of experience which prepared you to do the work in this job. Specialized experience is defined as experience that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled such as: Identifying the nature of emergency and level of response required; Dispatching emergency vehicles and providing critical information regarding the emergency; Providing medical support to caller, such as first aid, CPR or Heimlich maneuver instructions, until appropriate emergency units arrive on scene.
This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-05).
Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. For this level (GS-06), you must meet the qualification requirement using experience alone--no substitution of education for experience is permitted.
