You will serve as a MAINTENANCE MECHANIC in the Production Resources Department (Code 900), Production Resources Manager (Code 901), Service Shop (Code 990), of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.
Duties
You will perform a variety of tasks involved in the servicing and upkeep of vessels, and maintenance of radiologically controlled buildings.
You will perform tasks in at least two or more of the following trades; electrical, air-conditioning, pluming, pipefitting, carpentry, painting, and insulation.
You will prepare, pack, and transfer radiological material.
You will produce requested carpentry and woodworking products to support shipyard maintenance work.
You will plan and lay out the installation, modification, and repair of various new and existing piping systems and equipment.
You will operate and maintain HVAC systems and ductwork/vent inside radiological controlled areas.
You will remove and replace electrical fixtures and controls; making repairs; rearranging old or installing new outlets, relays, switches, light fixtures, and testing circuits.
Requirements

- You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
- You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
- Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
- You will be required to climb ladders and scaffolding.
- You will be required to work in small and/or confined spaces.
Qualifications

Experience interpreting and applying building plans and blueprints.
Experience utilizing knowledge of mechanical theory, pneumatic, and hydraulic principles to repair electromechanical devices, as well as shop mathematics to plan, compute, and layout projects.
Experience utilizing knowledge of the physical exterior and interior configurations of a large variety of submarines and surface ships.
Experience utilizing tools and equipment common to the shipbuilding trade.
Experience performing safety precautions, principals, and work methods associated with a maintenance mechanic.
Experience performing a variety of tasks involved in the servicing, upkeep of vessels, maintenance of radiologically controlled buildings, and working in trade practices i.e. electrical, air-conditioning, plumbing, pipefitting, carpentry, painting, and insulation.
Experience maintaining tools and equipment of the trade.
