You will serve as a MAINTENANCE MECHANIC LEADER in the Production Resources Department (Code 900), Production Resources Manager (Code 901), Service Shop (Code 990), of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD; however, the permanent duty station of the position is Nuclear Regional Maintenance Department (NRMD),Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Georgia.

Duties

You will be able to perform work, without close supervision, in at least two or more of the following trade practices: electrical, air-conditioning, plumbing, pipefitting, carpentry, painting, and insulation. You will ensure workers under your leadership have the necessary plans, procedures, blueprints, instructions, tools, etc. to perform their work operations. You will remove electrical fixtures and controls; make repairs; install new outlets, relays, switches, and light fixtures; test circuits; measure, cut, and bend wire and conduit to specified lengths and angles inside radiological controlled areas. You will operate and maintain Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning systems and ductwork/vent inside radiological controlled areas. You will plan and lay out the installation, modification, and repair of various new and existing piping systems and equipment. You will produce requested carpentry and woodworking products to support shipyard maintenance work. You will take appropriate action to prevent and/or overcome bottlenecks, equipment and power breakdowns, assure that proper types and amounts of equipment are at the job site without tying up needed and expensive equipment unnecessarily.

  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.

Qualifications

Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: ABILITY TO LEAD OR SUPERVISE: Experience working in at least two of the following trade occupations: electrical, plumbing, HVAC, pipefitting, carpentry, painting, and/or insulation. Experience installing and operating electrical fixtures, wiring, and controls and reading and following wiring diagrams. Experience constructing, operating, and servicing a variety of ventilation systems, and possibly power sources, and cooling units. Experience installing and operating various supply, disposal, and utility systems and equipment, such as water and gas systems, fire sprinkler equipment, and water closets. Experience planning and laying out the installation, modification, and repair of various new and existing piping systems and equipment. Experience operating general and precision carpentry and woodworking equipment to produce the requested finished product. Experience matching, tinting, toning, and blending coating materials and agents. Experience applying mechanical theory, pneumatic, and hydraulic principles to repair electromechanical devices. Experience applying principles and theories of the refrigeration cycle, temperature measurement, and refrigerant properties. Experience working with various high-pressure piping systems and equipment. Experience interpreting complex instructions, sketches, blueprints, and building codes. Experience reading and applying directions to various materials, solvents, and pre-coating agents.
