As a General Engineer and/or Physical Scientist in the National Nuclear Security Administration (NNSA), Sandia Field Office (SFO), Office of the Assistant Manager for Engineering (AME). The AME is responsible for performance direction, day-to-day oversight, and contract administration activities regarding safe nuclear facility operations in support of mission objectives.

Duties

As a General Engineer/Physical Scientist (Nuclear Safety Specialist), you will: Serves as a recognized technical authority on Safety Basis at the SFO with responsibility for managing and coordinating work in the context of the safety analysis program in support of the programmatic mission of the nuclear facilities. Serves as the Field Office point of contact for the Nuclear Criticality Safety Program. Provides authoritative source of information in the safety basis area of expertise, and is called upon by the NNSA to identify, analyze and devise workable alternatives for managing the more complex corporate issues associated with the safety basis program. Provides line management oversight of the M&O contractor in the risk management functional area in accordance with Departmental policy requirements. Provides oversight of the following risk management topical areas: safety analysis configuration control process and safety basis documentation. Skill in oral presentation and written communication sufficient to present issues and recommend solutions to all levels of management, stakeholders, and external audiences.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS: In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements listed under the Education section, you must possess the following specialized experience: EN-04: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower NNSA pay band level or GS grade level (EN/NN-03 or GS-13) in the Federal Service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as: (must demonstrate at least 3 of 4) Examples of this type of experience include: 1. Experience with nuclear safety management and/or providing leadership over nuclear facility operations which may include setting and adjusting priorities, oversee contractor performance, and completion of work. 2. Experience providing oversight over quality assurance activities, which may include interpreting policy and NEPA requirements associated with environmental compliance, planning, waste management and pollution prevention programs. 3. Experience providing oversight and/or leadership over a variety of nuclear safety activities, which may include Emergency Management, Occupational Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Fire Protection, Explosive Safety, Construction Safety, Electrical Safety, Pressure Safety, and Packaging and Transportation. 4. Experience with principles and theories of project management associated with multifaceted industrial complexes or conducting in dept reviews or appraisals to generate findings and trend performance data. All applicants must meet the basic requirements of the General Engineer/Physical Science occupational series.

801 Engineering-
Degree: professional engineering. The curriculum must: (1) be in a school of engineering with at least one curriculum accredited by the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology as a professional engineering curriculum; or (2) include differential and integral calculus and courses (more advanced than first-year physics and chemistry) in five of the following seven areas of engineering science or physics: (a) statics, dynamics; (b) strength of materials (stress-strain relationships); (c) fluid mechanics, hydraulics; (d) thermodynamics; (e) electrical fields and circuits (f) nature and properties of materials (relating particle and aggregate structure to properties); and (g) any other comparable area of fundamental engineering science or physics, such as optics, heat transfer, soil mechanics, or electronics.

OR

Combination of education and experience: college-level education, training, and/or technical experience that furnished (1) a thorough knowledge of the physical and mathematical sciences underlying professional engineering, and (2) a good understanding, both theoretical and practical, of the engineering sciences and techniques and their applications to one of the branches of engineering. There are alternate methods to meeting the engineering educational requirement (e.g., holding current professional engineering registration, having passed the EIT examination, or having completed specified academic courses or a related degree). 1301 Physical Scientist- Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics OR Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
