This position serves independently as a journeymen Plumber in the Facilities Management Service Line (FMSL), Maintenance & Operations (M&O) Section, Preventive Maintenance Shop at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center (MEDVAMC). You will be assigned to one of three shifts providing 24-hour a day coverage, 7 days a week in the Preventive Maintenance (PM) Shop. You will be required to complete all tasks related to installing, altering, and repairing plumbing fixtures and systems.
Duties
Major duties and responsibilities include:
Plumbing
Installs and maintains supply and disposal systems and equipment such as sewage, water, oil, and gas distribution systems; hydrants, water fixtures, lavatories, showers, sinks, fire sprinkler systems, dishwashing machines, and gas fueled cooking equipment
Performs replacement and reseating of faucet washers and flush valves
Repairs segments of piping, unplugs major sewer stoppages, repacks valves, repairs steam traps, pressure regulators, and replaces diaphragms in control valves
Performs maintenance and repair to hospital equipment such as steam sterilizers, autoclaves, bedpan sterilizers, water sills, demineralizers, kitchen equipment, dishwashers, food carts, steam pressure cookers, steam pots, gas griddles and bake ovens
Uses building plans, blueprints and sketches to locate and tap main lines; plans and lays out the routing, placement, slant, fall, and proper location of systems and equipment; installs valves, traps and unions where needed for proper functioning of the system
Uses shop mathematics to lay out angles, arcs and circles in planning the layout of piping systems
Installs, maintains, alters, and repairs plumbing facilities, including: roughing in, tearing out or moving toilets, urinals, sinks, work basins, laundry trays, drinking fountains, showers, electric water heaters, sump pumps, kitchen equipment, commercial and domestic hot water storage tanks, water heaters and circulating pumps, and hot water generators
Measures, cuts, bends, and threads pipe according to measurements specified in work orders or specifications
Determines what tools, equipment and replacement parts are needed according to work order, rough sketches or verbal instructions
Performs preventive maintenance by systematically checking assigned areas and performs repairs where possible or prepares work orders
Inspects, maintains, and repairs wet pipe and dry pipe fire sprinkler systems
Estimates material requirements, i.e. pipe, fittings, and fixtures in the sizes, types, or lengths needed
Selects and safely use tools and equipment for installing new utility, supply, or disposal systems or for modifying existing systems (plumb bobs, mercury gauges, dividers, augers, hydrostatic pumps, etc.)
Selects and safely uses tools & equipment for repair of installed plumbing or hooking up of fixtures to installed or roughed-in systems (hand and power pipe threaders and cutters, hacksaws, packing and caulking irons, etc.)
Pipefitting
Installs, modifies, repairs, cleans, adjusts and maintains new and existing high-pressure piping systems and equipment such as steam heating, hot water and steam generation, radiators, steam sterilizers, heat exchangers, hot water & condensate tanks
Installs, maintains and repairs lines for carrying oxygen or nitrous oxide, or vacuum lines for life support systems
Repairs/replaces a variety of system components and parts including piping, expansion joints, condensate and circulating pumps, regulators, valves, coils, diaphragms, steam filters, traps, fittings, gauges and thermostats
Sets up system routes and locates and marks spots for openings through which pipes are to pass or in which equipment will be installed
Threads and bends pipe, assembles pipe sections and fittings, hangs or lays assemblies into position considering proper slant, slope, fall and operation of systems
Clears pipe with nitrogen after installation
Performs welding operations such as spot, seam and flash, using electric resistance welding machines; also uses manual gas torch welding process such as oxyacetylene to join parts or components
Electrical
Installs, modifies, troubleshoots, repairs and tests new & existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, fixtures, controls and equipment with the electrical journeyman
Work includes secondary distribution lines & circuits used to supply a wide range of voltage, amperage, phase and frequency requirements, distribution panels, switchgear, power and control circuits, and LED and high intensity lighting systems
Air Conditioning/Refrigeration
Repairs, overhauls, maintains and services industrial & domestic reach-in and walk-in refrigerators, cold storage and cold-room equipment; freezers, water coolers, dehumidifiers, air conditioning units and systems, ventilating systems & related equipment
Services, repairs, adjusts and changes electro pneumatic controls associated with air conditioning & heating systems
Installs, repairs and maintains food service industry refrigeration equipment
Work Schedule: Sunday- Thursday 3:30 pm - midnight, subject to change based on the needs of the facility.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
Physical Requirements: Work frequently must be performed on ladders, scaffolding, platforms, ditches, or in hard-to-reach places requiring standing, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and generally working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment weighing 40 pounds or up to 75 pounds with assistance. Occasionally objects of heavier weights must be handled.
Working Conditions: Work is performed indoors and outside, with the possibility of exposure to all kinds of weather conditions, especially in emergencies. The environment is frequently dirty, dusty and greasy with frequent exposure to mud and water. Is occasionally exposed to bad smelling fumes and infection from unsanitary work sites. Injury from falls or use of power or hand tools is a possibility. May be required to work in unpleasant or hazardous areas requiring exposure to toxic fumes from chemical agents, burns, explosives, gases, etc. Some assignments require wearing of protective equipment such as breathing protection, rubberized suit, contaminate clothing and gas mask, goggles, or rubber gloves for extended periods.
