The incumbent serves independently as a journeymen Plumber in the Facilities Management Service Line (FMSL), Maintenance & Operations (M&O) Section, Preventive Maintenance Shop at the Michael E. DeBakey Veterans Affairs Medical Center (MEDVAMC).
Duties
Major duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:
Installing and maintaining supply and disposal system and equipment such as: sewage, water, oil, gas distribution systems, hydrants, water fixtures, lavatories, showers, sinks, fire sprinkler systems, dishwashing machines, gas fueled cooking equipment, etc.
Perform maintenance and repairs to building service systems, plumbing, gas, air, vacuum, oxygen and steam.
Perform replacement and reseating of faucet washers, flush valves; repairs segments of piping by replacement due to wear and tear, unplugs major sewer stoppages, repacks valves, repairs steam traps, pressure regulator, and replace diaphragms in control valves.
Perform maintenance and repair to personal, fixed and portable hospital equipment, such as steam sterilizers, autoclave, bedpan sterilizers, water sills, demineralizers, kitchen equipment of various types, dishwashers, food carts, steam pressure cookers, steam pots, gas griddles and bake ovens; repairs consists of replacing door gaskets, replacing door gaskets, solenoid valves, regulators, temperature control equipment, overhauling water pumps, bearings, motors, couplings and pumps replacement.
Perform preventive maintenance by systematically checking assigned areas.
Perform tasks in connection with the fabrication, repair, and maintenance of plumbing systems.
Perform the full range of journeyman level plumbing tasks including estimating material requirements.
Installs, modifies, repairs, cleans, adjusts and maintains new and existing high-pressure piping systems and equipment such as steam heating, hot water and steam generation, radiators, steam sterilizers, heat exchangers, hot water and condensate tanks.
Installation, modification, troubleshooting, repair and testing new and existing electrical lines, circuits, systems, fixtures, controls and equipment with the electrical journeyman.
Repair, overhaul, maintenance and servicing of industrial and domestic reach-in and walk-in refrigerators, cold storage and cold-room equipment; freezers, water coolers, dehumidifiers, air conditioning units and systems, ventilating systems and related equipment.
Work Schedule: Sunday - Thursday, 3:30 pm - 12:00 am, Subject to change based on the needs of the Agency.

Physical Requirements: Work frequently must be performed on ladders, scaffolding, platforms, ditches, or in hard-to-reach places requiring standing, stooping, kneeling, climbing, and generally working in tiring and uncomfortable positions. Frequently lifts, carries and sets up parts and equipment weighing 40 pounds or up to 75 pounds with assistance. Occasionally objects of heavier weights must be handled.
