You will serve as a PHYSICAL SCIENCE TECHNICIAN in the RADIOLOGICAL CONTROL OFFICE, RADIATION HEALTH DIVISION (Code 105.5) of PEARL HARBOR NSY AND IMF.

Duties

You will conduct basic data analysis and interpretation and participate in the development, preparation, and implementation of new procedures for laboratory radiation measurement and analysis equipment. You will provide training to military personnel assigned to this area. You will perform routine and special internal monitoring procedures on personnel qualified for occupational exposure to ionizing radiation. You will perform free release counting procedures using one or more appropriate free-release counting systems and geometry for various tools and equipment required to be counted and release prior to reuse. You will use specialized high resolution semi-conductor gamma ray detection equipment to accurately identify and quantify radioactivity in samples submitted for analysis. You will perform environmental radiation surveys in various areas throughout the Shipyard.

  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.

  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

For the GS-08 Grade level: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate at an advanced level, governing instructions, technical manuals and written procedures for radiation survey equipment; procedures required for responding to a radiological event involving a contaminated person; the formats and procedures used for personnel whole body monitoring and free release counting; the formats and procedures used for radiation area monitoring and skill in operating radiation survey equipment in support of shipyard operations. For the GS-07 Grade level: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-06 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate at an intermediate level, governing instructions, technical manuals and written procedures for radiation survey equipment; procedures required for responding to a radiological event involving a contaminated person; the formats and procedures used for personnel whole body monitoring and free release counting; the formats and procedures used for radiation area monitoring and skill in operating radiation survey equipment in support of shipyard operations. Education

Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess Specialized Experience (for positions at GS-4 and above): Examples of qualifying specialized experience include work in the fields of astronomy, physics, geophysics, chemistry, hydrology, health physics, engineering, electronics, geology, oceanography, and metallurgy.

Experience as a laboratory mechanic or in a trade or craft may be credited as general or specialized experience when the work was performed in close association with physical scientists or other technical personnel and provided intensive knowledge of appropriate scientific principles, methods, techniques, and precedents.

Education may be substituted for specialized experience as follows:

GS-08 Grade level
Two full years of graduate level education that is directly related to the position being filled.

GS-07 Grade level
One full year of graduate level education that is directly related to the position being filled.
