As the Pressure Garment System Technical Discipline Lead in the Space Suit and Crew Survival Systems Branch, you will provide space suit discipline expertise for pressure garment components, hazardous suited subject testing, and Extra Vehicular Activity (EVA) system hardware development. You will lead teams developing technology, architecture, operational concepts, and flight-designs in support of NASA's human spaceflight missions.
Duties
Provides leadership and technical direction of advanced research. Publishes advanced scientific findings that are made available to other technical and scientific groups and agencies.
Plans, directs, and conducts conceptual definition studies and analysis for a variety of advanced spaceflight systems and proposed projects for which no precedents are available.
Develops theories, forms test plans and conducts space suit component, space suit tests, Extra Vehicular Activity (EVA) system and ancillary hardware evaluations, testing and analysis.
Collaborates with other NASA centers, government agencies, universities, or technical companies to investigate concepts, principles, and theories. Represents the Division to the agency and external organizations as pressure garment expert.
Conceptualizes, reviews, and evaluates contractual and in-house programs relating to the development of pressure garment components and systems.
Provides expert leadership in safe conduct of Human-In-The-Loop (HITL), hazardous testing of pressure garment systems in laboratory, flight-environment, and analogue facilities.
Conducts risk assessments of pressure garment and EVA suit-related issues for NASA programs. Advises program managers on risk mitigation options.
Serves as the leading technical expert, initiates, and provides engineering analysis and consultations for development, design, testing and evaluation of pressure garment systems. Provides guidance, oversight, and resolution of technical issues.

Qualifications
In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below and have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.
NASA utilizes OPM-approved qualification and rating requirements specific for Aerospace Technology (AST) positions which recognizes NASA's unique aerospace work. The specific qualifications and minimum education requirements are further described below and within the education section of the job announcement.
G-14: To qualify at the GS-14 level, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level:
Providing engineering leadership for hardware development and technical resource management throughout the hardware development life cycle, in areas such as flight certification and sustaining, engineering data management, interface definition, engineering planning and design integration;
Working with pressure garment systems and EVA space suit hardware and associated ground support systems;
Testing pressure garment systems in laboratory and flight-environment simulations such as pressurized testing and hazardous HITL testing.

Education
Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:
a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus; and that provided an in-depth knowledge of theoretical and practical applications of computer science, including digital computer system architecture and system software organization, the representation and transformation of information structures, and the theoretical models for such representations and transformations.
If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.
Degrees in engineering technology are
not considered qualifying for this position.
