This position serves as in a full-time capacity as a member of the Suicide Prevention Team (SPT) within the Mental Health Service (MHS) at the John D Dingell VA Medical Center in Detroit, serving Veterans and staff at the main facility in Detroit and community based outpatient clinics (CBOCs). The position reports directly to the Acute Mental Health Section Supervisor, who reports to the Associate Chief of Staff (ACOS) for Mental Health (MH).
Duties
The Suicide Prevention Coordinator is responsible for the implementation, coordination and monitoring of Suicide Prevention at the facility.
Assigned duties include:
Clinical Responsibilities (10-30%)
Services as a subject matter expert and resource for the VA facility and community, related to Veteran suicide and suicide prevention
Provides evidence-based psychotherapy and other therapeutic interventions in group and individualized formats utilizing VA based guidance and guidelines with special emphasis on high risk for suicide interventions
Uses the most appropriate psychotherapeutic techniques in providing quality care
Provides case management interventions, at times at an advanced level, used in the treatment of veterans who are high risk for suicide
Liaisons/advocates on behalf of the Suicide Prevention Team and/or Veteran/caregiver between settings of care, both internal and external to the VA
Provides patient, family, and caregiver education, both in individual and group formats
Consults, collaborates, and coordinates with other staff who provide care to Veteran
Completes clinical reminders
Along with other SPCs, provides care coordination to ensure engagement in treatment and coordination with non-VA community providers
Provide mental health treatment (via phone, VVC, or in person), generally but not exclusively limited to suicide prevention focused, to Veterans to all Veterans with HRF or on the HRL
Completes suicide risk screens and documents assessments
Completes comprehensive assessments and collaborative safety ans when clinically indicated and provides follow-up appointments for Veterans flagged high risk for suicide
Provides safety planning to inpatients on the acute care unit.
Administrative Responsibilities (70-90% of time)
Maintains/updates the facility high risk (for suicide) list (HRL) Identifies high-risk patients and provides crisis intervention services
Follows up on all calls to the Veterans Crisis Line to assure timely access to care and appropriate follow-up Provides consultation to staff providing care to veterans at high risk for suicide
Oversees the high risk (for suicide) flag (HRF) process and ensures compliance with VACO, VISN, and facility requirements pertaining to HRF
Provides education and educational materials/tools/resources on suicide risk, warning signs, and prevention to Veterans, their families, VA staff, and at community outreach activities including through on-going regular displays and exhibits as well as during Suicide Prevention Awareness month
Works with other staff as part of a Suicide Prevention Team to accomplish goals and implement appropriate care and services
Attends and engages in Suicide Prevention Team, Acute Mental Health Section, Mental Health Services, as well as VISN and VACO Suicide Prevention meetings as assigned
Ensures new national templates, memos, and directives related to suicide prevention are provided to relevant staff at the facility
Collaborates with internal and external partners to further program goals and enhance patient centered care
Conduct outreach/education about VA services and suicide prevention best practices, safety planning, crisis intervention, and risk mitigation with community providers.
Ensures that the Suicide Prevention program is compliant with all regulations, policies, and procedures relevant to the population served and monitors medical center performance related to population served
Collaborates to develop and/or update local policy and procedures as prescribed by the national guidance and provides education and training to staff impacted by new/updated policy/procedure
Responsible for completion of all program evaluations, documentations, and suspenses as required by the Medical Center, VISN, and VACO as well as assuring compliance with accrediting/regulatory bodies
Engages in, provides, and/or tracks established Suicide Prevention Team activities/programs such as Caring Card Program, Postvention services, New Employee Orientation training, RISK-ID and SPED training, SBOR training, Operation SAVE training, etc. as well as new activities/programs as appropriate
Serves as a RISK-ID and SPED Champion
Serves as an SBOR Champion and participates as a member of the team reviewing SBOR reports
Completes required reporting pertaining, but not limited, to suicide attempts, death by suicide, RISK-ID, SPED, SBOR, and other VA requirements
Develops and distributes outreach materials to include brochures, fact sheets, web content, and other targeted information which highlights suicide prevention, warning signs and risk factors.
Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday 7:30 am to 4:00 pm

Qualifications
Basic Requirements:
United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
Education. Have a master's degree in social work from a school of social work fully accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE). Graduates of schools of social work that are in candidacy status do not meet this requirement until the School of Social Work is fully accredited. A doctoral degree in social work may not be substituted for the master's degree in social work. Verification of the degree can be made by going to http://www.cswe.org/Accreditation to verify that the social work degree meets the accreditation standards for a masters of social work.
Licensure/Certification. Individuals assigned as social worker program coordinator must be licensed or certified at the advanced practice level, and must be able to provide supervision for licensure.
Grade Determinations: At the GS-12 grade, you must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level. Experience must demonstrate possession of advanced practice skills and judgment, demonstrating progressively more professional competency. Candidate may have certification or other post-master's degree training from a nationally recognized professional organization or university that includes a defined curriculum/course of study and internship, or equivalent supervised professional experience.
In addition, the candidate must demonstrate the professional KSAs below:
Knowledge of program coordination and administration which includes consultation, negotiation, and monitoring.
Knowledge and ability to write policies, procedures, and/or practice guidelines for the program.
Ability to supervise multidisciplinary staff assigned to the program.
Skill in organizing work, setting priorities, meeting multiple deadlines, and evaluating assigned program area(s).
Ability to provide training, orientation, and guidance within clinical practice.

Preferred Experience: Mental Health Experience Preferred
The full performance level of this vacancy is GS12. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is the GS12.
Physical Requirements: Ability to physically access various treatment settings within the facility. Ability to use computers frequently/continuously throughout the day for data input and communication. Ability to use phone. Position is primarily sedentary, and incumbent must be able to sit for prolonged periods of time. May require light lifting and carrying (under 15 pounds) and climbing stairs as needed. Possession of current and valid driver's license is a requirement as incumbent is required to provider community outreach.
Ability to walk up and down steps. Ability to navigate unfamiliar surroundings.
