About the Position: This Industrial Hygiene Technician position is located at Kimbrough, Directorate of Clinical Support, Department of Preventive Medicine Industrial Hygiene. This is a Direct Hire Solicitation.

Duties

Assist Industrial Hygienist with industrial hygiene surveys to identify and evaluate potential health hazards. Perform sampling using standard methods to determine nature and degree of hazard for a variety of materials and environments. Calibrate and use industrial hygiene equipment such various air sampling equipment, sound level metering equipment, and industrial hygiene equipment used to detect physical, chemical, and biological hazards. Conduct surveys and health hazards for; physical, chemical, and biological hazards, to include, noise, heat, cold, ionizing and nonionizing radiation Instruct users of respiratory protection in the proper selection, usage, and care of the respirator in accordance with all applicable regulations.

Requirements

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • This position requires the completion of a pre-employment Physical Examination and an annual examination thereafter to ensure the continued, required level of physical health and ability or fitness to perform the duties of the position.
  • This position requires the incumbent be able to obtain and maintain a determination of eligibility for a Tier 1 security investigation or access for the duration of employment. A background investigation and credit check are required.
  • This position has a mandatory seasonal influenza vaccination requirement and is therefore subject to annual seasonal influenza vaccinations.
  • This position requires the incumbent to have tuberculosis testing.
  • Immunization screening is required. Hepatitis B immunization is required for all positions with direct patient contact. Applicants may be required to show proof of other immunizations depending on the type of position.
  • This position has a Temporary Duty (TDY) or business travel requirement of 5% of the time.

Qualifications

Who May Apply: US Citizens In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. Additional information about transcripts is in this document. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes identifying and evaluating conditions inside and outside the workplace that may affect employee health; calibrating industrial hygiene equipment to meet standards; and assisting with industrial hygiene investigations within assigned areas. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-08). OR Education: Two years of graduate level education in a field directly related to the work of the position, such as Industrial Hygiene, Environmental Science, Occupational Health Science, Occupational and Environmental Health, Toxicology, Safety science, or related science. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.) OR Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total semester hours minus 18) by 9. Add the two percentages. (Note: You must attach a copy of your transcripts.)

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
