The primary purpose of this position is to perform work of limited scope or difficulty involved in the maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings, and related utilities, and to assist journeyman or other higher graded maintenance workers in performing more difficult assignments associated with occupations such as carpentry, masonry, plumbing, electrical, cement work, painting, roofing, and other related trades.
Duties
The main duties of the position are to perform regular maintenance and minor repairs to park facilities and property, and assist higher grader maintenance workers when needed. Some of those duties include but are not limited to:
Construct, install, repair, and replace such items as doors, shelves, supply racks, hardware, frame structures, windows, trim and cabinets. In performing this work, the incumbent typically uses simple measuring devices such as tape measures and squares; and hand and power tools such as hammers, bars, handsaws, screw drivers, squares, skill saws, jig saws, routers, hand-belt sanders, and drills.
Perform painting of limited difficulty using brush and roller according to written work orders or verbal instructions on projects where appearances are not critical such as staining picnic tables and trash barrels.
Assists higher-level employees by mixing and stirring paints, moving drop cloths and scaffolds, and cleaning walls in preparation for painting. Utilizes scrapers, sandpaper, steel wool, brushes, rollers, ladders, air and airless sprayers.
Perform plumbing repairs of limited difficulty such as tightening or replacing in-kind fittings and fixtures which do not require custom fitting or solder joints; replace faucet washers; unplug drains using a plunger; replace liquid petroleum gas bottles.
Perform electrical tasks of limited difficulty such as replacing light switches and household light fixtures, changing light bulbs, and assisting electrician as needed.
Utilize hand tools such as screw drivers, pliers, and wire cutters.
Builds and set forms on projects of limited scope and difficulty such as sidewalks and steps which do not require precise measurements and involve only the setting of forms in straight lines. Mixes, pours, spreads, and levels cement and concrete in preparation for final finishing. In repairing damaged areas, removes broken concrete and prepares subsurface.
Perform masonry work of limited difficulty, such as assisting in the maintenance, repair, and stabilization of historic sites built of stone, mortar, or adobe and/or contemporary buildings, features, or structures.
Career Seasonal Position: This is a career seasonal position, subject to release and recall procedures. A permanent career seasonal position includes all the benefits of permanent employment but does not provide employment on a full year-round basis. As such, the selectee will be in a non-pay status at least 2 weeks up to 6 months per year based on project requirements or weather conditions. The selectee is guaranteed to work at least 6 months per year, but not more than 50 weeks per year, with the work schedule to be determined upon appointment. The typical season in pay status is late May through mid-December but can be variable during these months due to project requirements or weather conditions.

SCREEN OUT: Perform work at the highest level in at least TWO of the following major trades of carpentry, painting, roofing, plumbing, electrical, masonry, cement finishing, or other related occupations. Have knowledge of building trades, practices/standards, and building codes. Have been responsible for performing basic tests and measurements, and for selecting tools, to carry out work with little or no checks during progress. Have performed repairs to buildings and quarters and in constructing, installing, repairing and replacing items such as doors, shelves, supply racks, hardware, frame structures, windows, trim and cabinets; paints various types of structures, interior and exterior metal, and wood and masonry surfaces, wooden trim and new and old cabinets; Perform plumbing tasks such as replacing fittings, fixtures, and faucet washers; patch and repair roofs, replace light switches and house fixtures; build and set forms on projects such as sidewalks and steps involving only the setting of forms in straight lines, mix, pour, spread, and level cement and concrete in preparation for final finishing; monitor wastewater and water treatment equipment and gauges in accordance with a prescribed schedule and performs, routine tests. Have performed assigned tasks independently, with no technical assistance. Finished work is checked for adequacy by supervisor.

Education
There is no substitution of education for experience for Wage Grade (WG) positions.
