You will serve as a PIPEFITTER in the Naval Facilities Engineering Command of Public Works of NAVFAC SOUTHWEST.

Duties

You will install, modify, and repair systems by setting up system routes, placing and cutting route openings, and placing hangers for correct pitch and elevation. You will develop estimates for the maintenance, repair, dismantling, or modification of test sites. You will interpret instructions and blueprints of pipefitting systems and subsystems to facilitate timely repairs. You will calculate pipe, joint, or valve sizes needed to support pressures of systems. You will operate tools (e.g., benders, hose banders, hose coupling pres, hose coupling expander, high-pressure testing pumps, high pressure CO2 filling pumps) to install, repair, or modify piping systems or equipment. You will troubleshoot high-pressure piping systems and equipment to determine the need for modification or repair for operational readiness.

  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • Work requires walking, prolonged standing, reaching, lifting, bending, crouching, kneeling, pulling, pushing and climbing and crawling onboard ships
  • This position require visual acuity to identify color-coding of materials and heats of metals. Peripheral vision is required to avoid falls and moving objects.
  • This position requires the ability to lift/carry and set up installations and equipment weighing up to 60 pounds, and occasionally over 60 pounds.
  • This position requires rotating shift work.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non-ionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • This is a bargaining unit position
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal

This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: 1) Work from building plans, blueprints, and sketches to plan and lay out the routing, placement, pitch, elevation, pressure reduction, expansion, and operation of various piping systems and equipment. 2) Assist in laying out the installation, modification, and repair of various new and existing piping systems and equipment. 3) Using and placing the equipment at the proper levels and points in the system, and joining, sealing, and testing systems and equipment for proper pressures, leak-free joints, and operation. I work under close supervision of a work leader or journey-level employee who observes tasks in progress and upon completion to make sure they are properly performed.
