This Student Trainee position is located in the Department of Labor (DOL), Office of the Assistant Secretary for Administration and Management (OASAM), the Office of the Senior Procurement Executive (OSPE). Duties

Major duties at the GS-5 grade level include, but are not limited to: Tracks and monitors incoming correspondence. Types and proofreads documents for spelling, grammar, and punctuation. Collects, reviews, organizes, and compiles organizational performance and demographic data regarding the management of the supported organization. Documents business rules and processes of the assigned organization. Supports organization projects and programs. Attends and participates in workgroups. Provides assistance and support concerning training and development. Under the mentorship and guidance of a higher graded coworker, conducts individual orientation for all new hires and transfers. Duties performed at the GS-7 grade level are similar to those performed at the GS-5 grade level, however, they will be performed under more supervision at the GS-5 level. The advancement of Interns to higher-graded positions, prior to conversion, is strictly at the agency's discretion. To qualify for promotions, the Interns must have the same level and type of experience and/or education usually required for an initial appointment.

Requirements

  • Must be at least 16 years old and a U.S. Citizen.
  • Candidate required to obtain the necessary security/investigation level.
  • Requires a trial period for the duration of the Internship.
  • Appointees must sign a DOL pathways Program Participant agreement.
  • Must be in good academic standing as defined by the agency as 2.0 GPA or higher.
  • Must be enrolled at least half-time at a qualifying educational institution at the time of appointment and must maintain such enrollment throughout the duration of the appointment.
  • Subject to financial disclosure requirements.

Qualifications

Applicants must be accepted for enrollment or enrolled and seeking a diploma, associate, bachelor, master, professional, doctorate, vocational, technical degree, or certificate) on at least a half-time basis, at a qualifying educational institution and be in good academic standing as defined by the educational institution. OR Accepted for enrollment or enrolled in a qualifying career or technical education program that awards a recognized post-secondary credential (such as a Registered Apprenticeship Program or service program such as Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, Job Corps, and Climate Corps). Under this program, an individual who needs to complete less than a half-time equivalent of an academic, vocational, or technical course load immediately prior to graduating is considered eligible. Applicants who graduate from their degree seeking programs in the current semester can be considered for internships only if they are enrolled and/or accepted for enrollment in the upcoming semester in a proceeding degree seeking program. Interns may be non-competitively converted to a term, career-conditional or career appointment within 180 days following the successful completion of all of their educational and work experience requirements in accordance with 5 CFR 362.204 You may qualify on education: For GS-5: Completion of 4 academic years of post-high school leading to a bachelor's degree or equivalent degree. For GS-7: Completion of 1 full academic year of graduate level education; or completion of a bachelor degree with eligibility under the Superior Academic Achievement Provision. Superior Academic Achievement is based on a bachelor's degree that is demonstrated through class standing (upper 1/3 of class), grade point average (2.95/4.0 overall or 3.5/4.0 in major), or election to membership in a qualifying national scholastic honor society. One full academic year of undergraduate; graduate; vocational; trades; technical or high school education is the number of credit hours determined by the college, university, or school to represent 1 year of full-time study. The high school curriculum must be approved by a State or local governing body. All education beyond high school must be accredited by an accrediting body or organization recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. OR you may qualify on experience: Specialized Experience is the experience that equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA's) to perform the duties of the position successfully, and that is typically in or related to the position to be filled. To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the next lower grade level. Qualifying specialized experience for GS-5 includes 52 weeks of specialized experience at the GS-4 level: Performing basic program analysis work in administrative concepts and practices; monitoring procedures and office practices. Qualifying specialized experience for GS-7 includes 52 weeks of specialized experience at the GS-5 level: Performing basic program analysis work in administrative concepts and practices; monitoring procedures and office practices; experience in fact-finding and problem solving to ensure office conformity to applicable rules and regulations. OR: You may qualify on a combination of education and experience, the total percentage of experience at the required grade level compared to the specialized experience requirement, as well as the percentage of completed education compared to the educational requirement must equal at least 100 percent. Please note: A student may be appointed to any position that leads to qualification in a two-grade interval professional, administrative, or technical occupational series and that provides an opportunity for the student's growth and development toward the target position. Special Provisions/Interns with Previous Related Education or Experience. Previous education and/or experience may be evaluated to determine the highest grade level for which the individual is qualified.

Open to students who are currently enrolled, or accepted for enrollment, in high school, seeking a diploma or degree in an accredited technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school, qualifying career or technical educational program, including registered Apprenticeship Programs and certain volunteer service programs (such as Peace Corps, AmeriCorps, Job Corps, Climate Corps), on a full- or half-time basis as defined by the educational institution.

An academic year of undergraduate education is defined as 30 semester hours, 45 quarter hours, or the equivalent in an accredited college or university.

You must submit an academic transcript from your academic institution showing the date that you most recently completed the academic requirements described above. See the Required Documents section of this announcement. If you do not submit a transcript indicating your possession of the required education, you will not be considered for this position.
