The Education Specialist is located in the Audiology & Speech Pathology Service at VA Greater Los Angeles Healthcare System in Los Angeles, CA. The Audiologist (Education Specialist) has special clinical program responsibilities in the organization, management, and growth of the VA GLA HCS Audiology education program. The Incumbent serves as a subject matter expert, providing clinical guidance and consultation to colleagues and students within the service as well as other services within VA GLA.

Duties

Duties include but are not limited to: Provides leadership and directs oversight in the design, development, implementation, planning, and management of the VA GLA Audiology Education Program. Responsible for the strategic planning, recruitment, curriculum development, and direct education of third and fourth year doctor of audiology students. Works with University AuD Clinical Coordinators in conjunction with VA GLA Education Department in establishing academic affiliations. Serve as a facilitator for an interdisciplinary team trainee program and is responsible for training and guidance of other staff audiologists serving as clinical preceptors. responsible for managing the training and mentorship program for junior staff audiologists and audiologists wishing to grow in their clinical skillset. Clinical Responsibilities Organizes and implements AuD resident recruitment, develops rating criteria/interview questions, schedules panel interviews, and selects candidates. Applies for OAA funding for students, reapplying as necessary to ensure continued funding and growth of program as appropriate. Arranges a well-rounded clinical rotation schedule in all areas of audiologic practice . Arranges resident rotations in ENT, Neuropsychology, SLP, Physical Therapy, Neurology, and others. Arranges/provides coverage for resident rotations in Audiology from other services. Establishes and perpetuates relationships with academic programs throughout the nation. Strengthens and expands relationships with local AuD programs. Develops and modifies curriculum for AuD residents and 3rd year doctoral students. Monitors student progress with subjective and objective outcomes. Coaches clinical preceptors in education techniques and appropriate preceptor behaviors. Serves as SME for preceptorship and clinical education. Serves as clinical supervisor to 3rd and 4th year AuD students. Provides evidence-based clinical care and suggests methods of implementing changes determined necessary by evidence-based practice. Determines materials/supplies, equipment, and facilities required in support of student education. Provides feedback to Universities and academic partners as requested. Manages training and mentorship program for new hires, junior audiologists, and audiologists wishing to expand their clinical skillset. Manages VA GLA Audiology annual Clinical Pertinence Reviews. Coordinates monthly Audiology Education Meetings. Maintains VA GLA Audiology California CEU provider status. Serves as a resource to professional staff. Assumes complete professional responsibility for their clinical assessment findings, patient care decisions, and documentation. Manages education program outcome data collection and reports. Qualifications

Basic Requirements: United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy. Experience and Education: Experience: Six months of experience comparable to the next lower level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities related to the duties of the position to be filled. OR Education: Successful completion of two academic years above high school leading to an associate degree or a bachelor's degree with at least 12 semester hours in courses related to the position. OR Experience/Education Combination: Equivalent combinations of experience and education are qualifying. An example of a combination of experience/education is three months of experience comparable to the next lower level which demonstrates the knowledge, skills and abilities related to the duties of the position to be filled and one year above high school with a minimum of 6 semester hours related to the health care industry. Grandfathering May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria). Grade Determinations: GS-13 Experience: At least two years of experience as a professional audiologist, with at least one year comparable to the next lower grade level. Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities (KSAs): In addition to the KSAs required at the full performance level, the following KSAs are required: (a) Advanced knowledge in a focused area of contemporary audiology practice to provide oversight of a specialty program. (b) Skill to evaluate the specialty program to ensure deadlines and goals are met. (c) Skill to coordinate initiatives and build consensus among interdisciplinary team members. (d) Ability to monitor and report on work progress in the specialty program to adjust workload and processes. (e) Ability to serve as the SME and provide education relating to the specialty program. References: VA Handbook 5005, Part II, Appendix G29, AUDIOLOGIST GS-0665 The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-13. The actual grade at which an applicant may be selected for this vacancy is GS-13. Physical Requirements: The incumbent must have the ability to sit, stand, and walk for prolonged periods. There must also be a high degree of eye-hand coordination when working with the small components associated with hearing aids and earmolds. Ability to assist or lift a patient may also be required occasionally.
