The Motor Vehicle Operator is responsible for safely transporting patents and employees as well as supplies, freight, and food that is transported 365 days a year, 3 times a day, between campuses of the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System (VAPHS). The incumbent may be required to work at HJ Heinz and University Drive and as directed.
Duties
Logistics has a mission to transport food 365 days a year 3 times a day between campuses in a refrigerated food truck over 26,000lbs.
Major duties and responsibilities include:
Operating gasoline or diesel powered vehicles that are 26,000 pounds or more
Performing operator maintenance on all vehicles operated including monitoring fluid levels, replacing air filters and interior lights, checking tire pressure and hose connections, safety belts and washing the vehicle.
Driving station vehicles such as pick-up trucks, sedans and/or station wagons, as assigned.
Interring all road signs and markers.
Following policy and procedures for usage of fleet charge cards.
Complying with all traffic and safety regulations.
Performing general labor duties related to securing, loading, and unloading patients in wheelchairs, wheeled gurneys, stretchers, assist ambulatory patients as well as cargo as directed.
Performs other duties as assigned.
Work Schedule: Sunday-Wednesday, 530am-4:00pm

Qualifications

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualifications. Driver's License Requirement:
Must possess a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL), Class B, with passenger (P) endorsement to operate a motor vehicle. (Please do not submit a copy of your license with your application package. You will be required to show your valid commercial driver's license at the time of your interview.)
PHYSICAL EFFORT: Moderate physical effort is used in reaching, bending, turning, or moving hands, arms, feet and legs to simultaneously operate hand and foot controls, and in normal driving because of the larger and heavier vehicle or equipment involved. Physical effort is required in the frequent handling of objects occasionally weighing over 50 pounds and when making couplings with auxiliary equipment when chains, bars, hooks, etc., must be lifted and properly secured. Considerable physical effort may be required to change tires and make limited emergency repairs while o assigned trips.
Lift and handle heavy equipment and exert heavy physical effort lifting, pushing and pulling when lifting equipment, supplies, and furniture. Full use of arms and legs to safely operate mechanical equipment. Simultaneously manipulate equipment controls for tasks requiring body coordination.
Exposed to congested traffic conditions, unsafe roads conditions due to ice, snow, rain, fumes, and dust. Also may be in contact with diseases from patients.
WORK CONDITIONS: Works mostly outside and operates vehicles in all kinds of weather in a controlled traffic environment throughout a government installation or establishment and on public roadways. Operate vehicles in all types of traffic and weather on public roads and is exposed to the danger of serious accidents. Will drive in heavy traffic and at highway speeds over complicated road and interchange systems.
May be exposed to dirt and fumes, and to the possibility of cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving or from falling objects when loading and unloading the vehicle.
EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities.
