These positions are located within the Transportation Section at the Pittsburgh VA Medical Center in Pittsburgh, PA. These positions transport patients, family members and employees, as well as supplies/freight and food between campuses of the VA Pittsburgh Healthcare System.
Duties
Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
Operates gasoline or diesel-powered vehicles including 42 passenger buses, passenger vans, cargo vans, and trucks;
Operates passenger buses or passenger ambulance buses regardless of gross vehicle weight;
Recognizes and avoids hazardous conditions;
Performs operator maintenance on all vehicles operated;
Drives station vehicles such as pick-up trucks, sedans and/or station wagons;
Interprets all road signs and markers;
Follows policy and procedures for usage of fleet charge cards;
Complies with all traffic and safety regulations to avoid injury and discomfort to patients;
Performs general labor duties related to securing, loading and unloading patients in wheelchairs, wheeled gurneys, stretchers, assist ambulatory patients as well as cargo;
Makes difficult judgments concerning safe vehicle clearance, spacing, turning and braking, as well as safe loading and arranging of cargo;
Performs other duties as assigned
Work Schedule: Tuesday - Saturday; 6:45am to 5:15pm

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION: Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.
Qualifications
COMMERCIAL DRIVER'S LICENSE: This position requires a valid, Class B, Commercial Driver License (CDL) with Passenger endorsement. NOTE: Your licensure must be clearly documented within your application materials. DO NOT submit a copy of your driver's license; you will be required to provide proof of licensure if referred for interview.
PHYSICAL EFFORT AND WORK CONDITIONS: The employee is required to lift heavy objects while loading and unloading cargo. The motor vehicle operator assists patients in and out of vehicles, securing mobility aids in preparation for transit. The position requires prolonged periods of driving, sometimes in times of traffic congestion, and the operator must be constantly alert and aware of his/her surroundings. Working conditions for this position are hazardous. The operator may be required to drive on steep terrain during periods of inclement weather. The operator is subjected to the stress of driving for long periods of time in heavy traffic conditions. The position requires the employee to be exposed to exhaust fumes and loud noises daily. The operator will also work outside in the elements for periods of time (i.e., rain, snow and ice and extreme heat).
