The Air War College Department of Strategy invites applications for the Professor of Strategy position beginning summer 2025. AWC is a resident master's degree program for senior military/civilian leaders from the U.S. and partner nations. The department receives excellent financial support for research, conference attendance, and professional development. The initial appointment may be up for 3 years and is renewable. The position should be considered equivalent to tenure-track.
Duties
Teaching: leading graduate-level seminars of 12-16 students at a 2/2 equivalent load
Teaching the Department of Strategy's core curriculum, the Foundations of Strategy course
Teaching electives in the applicant's areas of specialization and/or teaching in AWC's Regional Security Studies course
Developing curriculum and advising student research
Facilitating experiential learning (war games, strategy exercises, etc.) throughout academic year
Research: engaging in professional research and writing in areas of expertise
Publishing book manuscripts, articles, monographs, and book reviews in scholarly journals, professional journals, and other outlets
Presenting results of research at conferences and symposia
Service: serving in faculty positions supporting personnel and programs
Participating with other professional military education schools, professional organizations, AF/DoD institutions, universities, and colleges for professional development
Delivering lectures, conducting seminars, participating in panel discussions related to AWC curriculum
Maintaining academic currency by consistently reviewing professional literature and participating in professional associations

- A secret security clearance is required
- You may qualify for moving expenses, if authorized, it may be covered using PCS, Recruitment or Relocation Incentive in accordance with agency policy.
- This job is being filled by an alternative hiring process and is not in the competitive civil service. This is an Administratively Determined position in the excepted service.
Qualifications
Teaching experience (preferably at the graduate level) commensurate with professorial rank sought and/or extensive professional experience and a suitable publication record are required.
Broad knowledge of the interdisciplinary subject matter (military/diplomatic history, international relations, leadership, airpower, planning) that comprises the AWC strategic studies curriculum is highly desired.
Knowledge of scholarly research methods and ability to conduct inquiry and publish in leading academic venues is required.
Candidate must demonstrate the ability to communicate effectively to varied audiences.

Education
A master's degree in military/diplomatic history, international relations, strategic studies, or a related field is required. A PhD is highly desired and advanced doctoral students are encouraged to apply.
