The Provost and Chief Academic Officer reports directly to the Air University Commander and President (AU/CC) as part of the University's senior leadership team. The CAO serves as the AU/CC's principal advisor on issues relating to the academic affairs of the university, including faculty, curriculum, students, accreditation, advisory boards, and academic support services. The CAO provides the academic vision and leadership necessary to achieving academic excellence across the university.
Duties
At the direction of the AU/CC, and in coordination with the Center Commanders, School Commandants, and Institute Directors, the Provost and CAO develops policies and strategic plans for implementing Air Force professional developmental programs, including pre-commissioning, professional military education, professional continuing education, and undergraduate and graduate education programs. Establishes institutional effectiveness assessment processes and guides the implementation of these processes. To the maximum extent possible, the CAO also serves as a subject matter expert in their field of academic specialization and prepares and delivers instruction in the core curriculum of AU schools and in specialized academic programs.
Supervises the university's academic support functions, including the Academic Affairs staff, and oversees the full scope of activities in the Office of the Registrar, AU Library, AU Press and the AU Teaching and Learning Center, including strategic alignment with university initiatives and subordinate units/programs' needs. The incumbent serves as the AU authority for faculty management (requirements planning, acquiring, developing, employing, assessing/rewarding, and succession planning) and develops policy and procedural guidance for the recruitment, development, academic promotion, and retention of resident and nonresident faculty. Advises AU/CC, Center Commanders, School Commandants, Institute Directors, and Deans on the educational credentials, experiential qualifications, and teaching competence of all prospective AU faculty members.
Oversees processes to maintain federal degree-granting authority and regional and specialized accreditations, particularly those leading to regional accreditation and/or reaffirmation from the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools Commission on Colleges. Advises the AU Centers and Schools on the processes and guidelines for Joint Professional Military Education Certification. Establishes and maintains professional relationships with academic and professional colleagues in other DoD schools and organizations, other federal degree-granting institutions, and civilian higher education institutions.

Qualifications
Proven leadership in an executive role (e.g., Dean, Provost, etc.) in the academic administration of a regionally accredited post-secondary institution offering graduate-level programs.
Proven skills engaging and communicating successfully with diverse stakeholders to build consensus and cooperation.
Significant knowledge of and experience with civilian and Joint accreditation processes.
Significant leadership experience at a senior level in large complex organizations.
A record of sustained university-level teaching effectiveness, evidence of maturity as a scholar resulting in national and/or international recognition, and an outstanding reputation in his/her academic discipline or field, which merit the award of the academic rank of full professor at an accredited graduate degree-granting institution.

Education
An earned PhD or other appropriate terminal degree from a regionally accredited postsecondary institution in a discipline appropriate to the AU mission such as International Relations, Military History, Organizational Leadership, Political Science, Government or other closely related fields.
