You will serve as a Research Biologist in the Armed Forces Radiology Research Institute of UNIF SRVS UNI OF THE HLTH SCI.
Duties
You will conduct research in radiobiology to understand the biological effects of ionizing radiation and assist in developing strategies to protect the warfighter.
You will plan, develop, and perform experiments designed to understand the health effects of exposure to ionizing radiation.
You will assess the trans-generational, teratological, carcinogenic, and immunotoxic potential of radiation.
You will participate in all phases of the complete research process including problem definition, planning, execution, analysis, interpretation, and publication of findings.
You will review research data, interpret and explain the results to the principal investigator, and assist in the final interpretation and dissemination of results in the form of oral and/or presentations, technical reports, and journal articles.
You will perform a variety of small-animal laboratory procedures including animal handling, breeding, developmental and behavioral assessments, anesthesia and surgery, euthanasia, necropsy, and tissue harvests.
You will perform a wide variety of molecular biology, physiology, biochemistry, and cell biology analyses to characterize the effect of radiation exposure on animal and cell physiology.
You will train and instruct other employees, including tasking, directing, and assisting in the evaluation of their performance.
You will prepare plans to meet substantial workload changes and proposes and justifies staff revisions, priorities in work assignments and deadlines to increase productivity, etc.
You will design, implement, and analyze clinical, experimental, and/or surgical experiments and studies involving ionizing radiation exposure and its medical countermeasures
You will determine when previous methodology is non-existent and develop new methodologies to meet goals of the research protocols and improve existing research techniques and methodologies.
You will prepare long and short-term laboratory operation schedules to maximize efficiency in accomplishing research goals.
You will make extensive use of system controlling and data processing software and hardware during the collection and analysis of experimental results.

- This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
Qualifications
In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Performing all phases of the research process including problem definition, planning, execution, analysis, interpretation, and reporting of findings; 2) Utilizing experience in manipulation/ breeding of laboratory animals (ex. rodent handling and assessment, urine/ blood collection, drug injections, delivery and maintenance of anesthesia, recognition of pregnancy, etc.); 3) Using specialized laboratory Instrumentation and equipment for medical and scientific research activities; and 4) Using computer equipment and software for data collection, storage, and manipulations including statistical analyses, word processing, and graphics production. Applicants must possess:
Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position.

Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
Education may be substituted for experience as follows:
GS-12 - successful completion of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.
Foreign Education: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the qualification requirements if the applicant can provide documentation indicating that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
