This position is located with the Rural Development Technology Office. Incumbent is responsible for all duties associated with controlling, scheduling and monitoring of computer processing and assisting users in formulating requests for computer services. Also accountable for the printing, distributing and inserting of all hardcopy reports for production and testing. Work is performed in a shift operation. There is one position for night shift C.
Duties
Uses controller to download automated mail run data file (MRDF) to create and produce financial reports using the mainframe. Uses controller to monitor and perform restart procedures due to program/system failures, and to reset passwords.
Operates high speed electronic mail insertion equipment which includes barcode software and sets up the mail inserter and postage meter, making equipment adjustments as needed. Sets up insertion chassis for mail jobs.
Operates and monitors printing system controller(s), roll feeder, paper drill and other peripheral equipment.
Ensures the total availability of the computer system(s) which includes single and multiconnected processors, magnetic tape units, magnetic disk units, remote terminals, etc.
Ensures that the correct meter, postage amount, date, envelope and insertion materials are used.
Provides all necessary information to maintain an audit trail. This includes writing problem reports and a variety of other logs. Attends shift turnover meetings daily.

Qualifications
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
Time in grade: Applicants must meet one year at the next lower grade to be considered for the next higher grade. (e.g.: one year at the GS-07 grade level for consideration for the GS-08 grade level.)
GS-8 LEVEL: Applicants must meet one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level; or its non-federal equivalent that demonstrates: independently performing periodic or scheduled preventative maintenance. Review a variety of reports, schedules, and other data to respond to malfunctions and/or backlogs. Interprets and adapts guidelines to resolve unusual problem or situations not previously encountered. Operates multiple computers and process through online, real time, and batch applications. Investigate system malfunctions to determine the cause. Defines and isolates specific problems. Independently performs power-up/down procedures for large-scale cent processors and operating systems with associated hardware resources. Operating high speed printers and large scale mail inserts. There is no substitution of education for experience at the GS-08 level.
