Duties

As a Research Behavioral Scientist you will: Evaluate human factor considerations within an organizational setting and the impact of organizational and behavioral issues on the health and safety found in the workplace as it relates to the safety and health of mine workers nationwide. Responsible for one or more broad investigations within the Division/Branch. Initiate and maintain contacts with epidemiologists, behavioral/social and health scientists, engineers, physicians, statisticians and other research personnel in government agencies, academic institutions, and industry, who are involved in common areas of research. Ensure the proper interchange, cross evaluation, and coordination of effort involved in on-going studies with these agencies.

Qualifications

All qualification requirements must be met by the closing date of the announcement. Basic Qualifications: Degree: behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. OR Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. Minimum Qualifications: To qualify at the GS-13 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level, which must include the following experience: leading, designing and conducting research studies related to developing tools and techniques for collection of workers and organizational data in the mining industry or other comparable industries; incorporating measures of human behavior, perceptions, and social context into occupational health studies; and leading analyses that increase knowledge about the efficacy of occupational health and safety intervention efforts. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

Copy of your transcripts or equivalent documentation is required for positions with an education requirement, or if you are qualifying based on education or a combination of education and experience. An official transcript will be required if you are selected.

College or university degree generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. For a list of schools which meet these criteria, please refer to Department of Education Accreditation page.

FOREIGN EDUCATION: Education completed in foreign colleges or universities may be used to meet the requirements. You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program.
