Duties

As a Research Behavioral Scientist, you will: Conduct research which provides effective workplace solutions for mining. Apply professional training in the field of behavioral sciences in all phases toward the accomplishment of major mine health and safety research projects. Typical assignments will be directed toward the conception, design and execution of research studies to (1) identify strategies for improving mine health and safety management systems, (2) help the mining industry understand how to positively influence miners' understanding, acceptance and adoption of new safety and health technologies, and (3) improve miners' health and safety through the implementation and assessment of new behavioral safety concepts, techniques and interventions. Serve as an investigator on research projects that formulates research protocols, budgets, and research project plans; designs experiments; generates empirically testable hypotheses; develops valid and reliable data collection instruments; performs statistical tests of hypotheses that help to extend and refine theories about factors influencing miners' safety and health-related beliefs and actions and interprets data and reports on the findings and implications of the study. Represent National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) in presenting the findings and results from various studies at scientific conferences and professional meetings and authoring selected papers and documents in appropriate books and journals. Develop and write detailed proposals for new social science research projects, and to recommend promising new directions for NIOSH's research programs. Provide technical advice in behavioral science to other researchers and to entities within NIOSH.

Requirements continue: In accordance with Executive Order 12564 of September 15, 1986, The Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is A Drug-Free Federal Workplace. This position may require a Drug Test and be subject to Random Drug Testing. The position may require the submission of a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment and be subject to reasonable suspicion and post-accident drug testing upon hiring. If required to submit to urinalysis, the appointment to the position will be contingent upon a negative test result. Current or Former Political Appointees: Agencies must seek prior approval from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) before they can appoint a current or recent political appointee to a competitive or non-political excepted service position at any level under the provisions of title 5, United States Code. If you are currently, or have been within the last 5 years, a political Schedule A, Schedule C, or Non-career SES employee in the executive branch, you MUST disclose that to the Human Resources Office. Failure to disclose this information could result in disciplinary action including removal from Federal Service. Current or Former Political Appointees: Submit SF-50. Basic Qualifications: Degree: behavioral or social science; or related disciplines appropriate to the position. OR Combination of education and experience that provided the applicant with knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. OR Four years of appropriate experience that demonstrated that the applicant has acquired knowledge of one or more of the behavioral or social sciences equivalent to a major in the field. Minimum Qualifications: For GS-11: To qualify at the GS-11 grade level, you must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level, which must include the following experience: identifying or developing tools to collect data on workers and organizations in mining or similar industries, incorporating human behavior and social context into health studies, and analyzing the effectiveness of health and safety interventions. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

A copy of your transcripts or equivalent documentation is required for positions with an education requirement, or if you are qualifying based on education or a combination of education and experience. An official transcript will be required if you are selected.

You must show proof the education credentials have been deemed to be at least equivalent to that gained in conventional U.S. education program.
