Duties

You will clean your worksite, inspect completed work, report any uncorrected deviations from standards and environmental hazards (such as oil spills) to supervisor, and perform necessary actions to dispose of hazardous waste. You will perform work on structural shapes, plates, sheet metal, castings, and forgings, as well as repairing machinery such as shafting, diesel engines, turbines, valves, valve seats, high pressure systems, and more. You will perform welding work using the accepted trade methods and techniques, including various electric, gas, and inert gas-shielded welding processes utilizing manual, semi-automatic, and automatic equipment. You will lay out, fabricate, and assemble various sheet metal structures, as well as install, fit, and locate positions for pieces by reference to water lines, center lines, frame lines, buttock lines, and other reference points.

  • At the WG-10 level, you will be required to obtain and maintain current Welding Procedure and Welding Qualification Test (Welding Code: ASME SECT IX) certifications.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • You will be required to maintain a current Facility Response Team (FRT) qualification.
  • You will complete Personal Qualification Standards (PQS) requirements as assigned.
  • You will complete Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response (HAZWOPER) courses.
  • Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g. fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and nonionizing radiation and chemicals). You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
  • You may be required to obtain a forklift license up to 10 tons (20,000 pounds) capacity. Government certification required, meaning a specific physical and other testing would be required.

Qualifications

Qualification requirement emphasis is on quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time. Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the job elements and screen out listed below. This job has a screen-out element which will be used to determine minimum eligibility for this job. Applicants who do not receive a minimum of two points on the screen-out element(s) will be found ineligible. The Screen-out Element for this position is: Ability To Do The Work Of The Position Without More Than Normal Supervision. Qualifying experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Interpreting and applying blueprints, drawings, sketches, technical manuals, tables, charts, work orders, schematics as applicable and work to written weld specifications, process instructions and procedures; 2) Determining metals or alloys and identifying and associating metals and electrodes by color code and standard markings; 3) Performing a wide range of manual welding processes and making difficult welds; 4) Welding to meet critical tolerances and very high standards of non-destructive testing such as ultrasonic (UT), magnetic particle (MT), liquid penetrant (LP), and radiographic (RT) examination; 5) Welding on high pressure hydraulic systems and P-1 piping which must withstand pressures up to 2000 pounds per square inch; and 6) Producing welds to the acceptance standards of American Bureau of Shipping (ABS), Military Specifications, military standard design (MIL-STD) and drawings, ASTM (and others specifications as applicable) for strength, tightness or pressure tests on waterborne craft, brows, platforms, separators and other harbor support equipment.
