You will serve as a ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION SPECIALIST in the Environmental Services Branch of NAVAL FACILITIES ENG COMMAND HAWAII. GS-09: $51,110.00-$66,445.00 GS-07: $62,517.00-$81,272.00

Duties

You will assist the Supervisory Environmental Protection Specialist on various sampling projects. You will train new employees on sampling techniques and protocols. You will pick up, transport, repackage, and properly store hazardous and industrial wastes from various projects. You will collect samples of hazardous chemicals from containers of hazardous waste for laboratory analysis. You will determine whether waste chemical is hazardous by EPA regulation definitions and select and utilize appropriate safety equipment and materials for its proper handling and storage.

  • Within the Department of Defense (DoD), the appointment of retired military members within 180 days immediately following retirement date to a civilian position is subject to the provisions of 5 United States Code 3326.

  • This is a bargaining unit position.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current valid United States driver’s license.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain an interim and/or final security clearance prior to entrance on duty. Failure to obtain and maintain the required level of clearance may result in the withdrawal of a job offer or removal.
  • You will be required to successfully complete a pre-appointment physical examination.
  • You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators, and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
  • This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
  • You will be required wear personal protective equipment such as, full face respirators, self-contained breathing apparatus, and other safety equipment to level A capability.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a current certification in asbestos and lead abatement and have documented training in hazardous waste handling and emergency response.
  • You will be required to obtain and maintain a government license to operate a 6,000-pound forklift, an electric forklift, and a narrow aisle electric forklift.

Qualifications

GS-09: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-07 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Gathering samples such as lead paint, asbestos, drinking water, and/or wastewater using special devices; 2) Tracking projects through completion by monitoring resources, funding availability, and timelines; 3) Picking up, transporting, repackaging, and properly storing hazardous and industrial wastes; 4) Assisting in cleanup and decontamination of land bound hazardous chemical spills; and 5) Training new employees on sampling techniques and protocols. **NOTE** This information must be clearly supported in your resume. GS-07: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: 1) Assisting in various sampling projects which include sampling industrial wastes, hazardous wastes, storm water, fresh/ocean waters and soils; 2) Performing inspections on completed work; 3) Utilizing forklifts, steel drums, and strapping materials to pick up, transport and repackage hazardous materials; 4) Determining appropriate safety equipment and materials needed for proper handling and storage; 5) Utilizing proper spill cleanup techniques. **NOTE** This information must be clearly supported in your resume. Education

In lieu of specialized experience, you may qualify with the following education or combination of both education and experience:

GS-09:
Successful completion of a master's or equivalent graduate degree
OR
Successful completion of two full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree
OR

OR
A combination of experience and graduate education as described above that equates to one year of experience
